I've got a question about tipping in general everyday life that doesn't relate to MP's or Sp's.

Situation: There is this Sports Bar that I go to occassionally. One of the things I like about the place is their chicken wings. Most of the time I actually stop in to get some wings "to go". While I wait for them to cook I usually sit at the Bar and have 1 beer. By the time I finished the beer the wings are ready. Its carried from the kitchen to me in a brown paper bag. The total bill usually comes to just over $20 (Beer $3.50-$4 - unsure as I always order something else and only look at the total bill).

I normally tip 15% when I go to restuarants and eat there, but this is a take-out siuation as I see it. When I go to Swiss Chalet I tip 15% if I eat there but nothing if I do take-out. In the above situation I normally tip $1.50-$2 in total for the beer and wings (all depends on the change I am carrying). Depending on how you look at it I am either tipping 40-50% on the beer or only 7.5-10% in total.

Question: What's the right tip amount? Am I being too cheap, too generous or just right?

a bag of wings is 16 bucks?Sounds to me like the tip is already built into the price.

That's 20 wings (large sized wings too) with the taxes included. They also give either a lot of Carrot and Celery Sticks or an order of Fries to accompany the wings. All in all the wings are about $0.50 each for very decent sized wings (unless they are on special).

Really Retired.....REALLY!
Well personally I would normally tip about half of what I would normally tip if I had eaten in the restaurant.
I order out at Kelseys every once in a while and I always make sure to tip the bartender (who takes the take out orders).
Usually it is around 7-10% depending on the change etc.

So your tip sounds good to me!

I think this is OK

For a $ 20 takeout a tip of $1.50-2.00 sounds good to me. Anything more will be too much; unless you have a cute waiteress to impress ;)

Thanks for the response guys.

I asked this because one time I was ordering take-out and there were 2 guys at the bar that have been there for quite awhile (pretty sauced). 1 was a regular and the other wasn't. The second guy was leaving as I was finishing my 1 beer and the wings were about to arrive. He had a tab running and then when he paid up for about 6 beers he only left about a $1.50 tip ($0.25 a beer) - pretty damn cheap by any standards. Well, the first guy, who was a regular, was commenting and cursing about how much of a cheap bastard he was. About 1 minute later my wings arrived and when I was paying and assessing my tip he was watching cloesly and sizing me up. Now, I will not be guilted into giving more than what is right but it did make me feel a little uncomfortable so I was looking for your thoughts as well.

I am glad you did the right thing

I am glad that you did not secumb to the pressure and gave the right tip. If you had paid more the tip of the next customer would have looked bad :)
