To test their commitment to freedom of speech?

Julian Assange said that his organisation deliberately placed its servers in certain jurisdictions, such as Amazon in the USA, to test their commitment to freedom of speech.

Freedom of speech means differnet for different people and countries. Some are accused as they crush all voices against their govt. and don't allow freedom of speech (mostly third world countries, muslim countries including Iran and CHINA). Well when someone hit accusers / freedom of speech champions, they did not like it and could not set good example...

Having freedom of speech has to tempered by knowing when to stfu. Assange is really just at best a Libertarian, at worst an Anarchist. He has received, although he'll claim he never actually received anything, stolen files/e-mail/information and is at least complicit in decimating them to whomever. Most moderate countries will handle these big 'secrets', known by most in the diplomatic circles, but the nut bar governments will ring them out for all their worth to whatever their goals are.

As for the rape charges, I don't have a lot of details, but my thoughts are that the authorities are just doing a Capone on him.

i think Assange should be applauded for standing up to corrupt global leaders, administratons and militaries that are slowly bruning down peoples rights and freedoms all over the world...
If that was what he had done this time I might agree with you. I have heard no reports of corruption or malfeasance coming out of these latest leaks. The ones I've heard of are just back channel chatter between politicians and diplomats that have sometimes proved to be embarrassing.

Their leakage however, will probably mean that fewer people in foreign countries will disclose anything to the American government in future. This will not result in a safer world for you and me. Additionally some people who have been identified here might find their lives are now at risk. Had this been done to reveal some earth shattering and important information about government misdeeds that might be worth it. But risking lives or peoples safety to satisfy a prurient interest or voyeuristic need is unconscionable. He should be ashamed.

Sure, so where's the shit on Russia, the PRC, North Korea, Zambawe, Burma, Indonesia, etc.? Bare one, bare all.

In MBA school, they taught us the meaning of BALANCE. This Assange shithead doesn't know the meaning of BALANCE. If you are going to talk about a person or a country you talk about the GOOD as well as the bad. This Assange only publishes the bad and only about one country.

On this we agree. The fact that he handing out documents given him by one source inside the US means that the leaks will be about the US. We'll see if he does the same with other countries, which I doubt. The pressure is on from other countries and some do-gooders might not take the chance to repeat the theft.

Effectively he is a fence. He receives stolen goods and distributes them.

Give him a medal.

If they make the rape charges stick he may find himself with his own Olestra style leakage.

Does anybody know the pedigree of this asshole? Was he raised by wolves? Did his ancestors arrive in Australia on prison ships?

Answer is very simple, that ONE supper power country is only country who is involved in affairs of all other countries (govt. make-break, invlovement in elections, support for oily ROYAL families, dictators), no other country does that...

There's something insincere about claiming to be battling free speech at this juncture. He's just running a business, nothing more, nothing less.

Bingo! These fuckers are re-defining colonialism without any of the white man's guilt complex or baggage.
On one hand they bring free medical care to Kenya via their hospital ship Peace Ark and on the other they lay road through the jungle as wide asa four lane highway to strip mine some prime real estate near Lake Victoria in, I believe, Tanzania. They got it down pat just the colonial European powers of old.

Since they are not THE superpower, they get a free pass (at least according to one TERBIE).
