This is very sad news!

UPDATE: We're told after Petty got to the hospital he had no brain activity and a decision was made to pull life support.

Tom Petty was rushed to the hospital Sunday night after he was found unconscious, not breathing and in full cardiac arrest ... law enforcement sources tell TMZ.

EMTs rushed to his Malibu home and were able to get a pulse. He was rushed to the UCLA Santa Monica Hospital and our sources say he was put on life support.

Petty's condition is unknown but was critical from the moment he was found.

Petty, who became famous with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in 1978 with "Breakdown," is 66.

We've been in touch with numerous people from Petty's camp and they are clearly upset but not talking.

Terrible news

He loved Bob Dylan and tried to emulate him. I love this song and video.

That's to bad that he has passed away. He was a good artist and musician. He was also a member of the Travelling Wilburys along with Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynn, George Harrison and Roy Orbison. He will be missed but his music will go on forever.

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeiii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttttttt!

I didn't care much for Tom Petty's music at first, he was the anti-Frank Zappa. With time, I started to clue into his lyrics and found out he was closer to Zappa than I though. His music was deceptively simple but his lyrics were just as sharp, whimsical instead of mocking.

The Rodney Dangerfield song.

Yes, Petty wrote that song after meeting the legendary comic at a resort in St Thomas - and yes they did share a heater. His songs were all about dealing with life's little complications - like waiting on a date.

RIP, such a unique voice.

Celebrity deaths always come in threes, Hugh Hefner, Monty Hall and now Tom Petty.

That really sucks. RIP.

When I was growing up "Running Down a Dream" was played without fail at all the arenas we visited some time during the game.

Great song.

My heart is so heavy today. I can't tell you. Glad I got to see him at the ACC this past July.

The first time I saw him was in the late 80s. I've gone to every single show he played in Toronto since.

This is another beautiful song he wrote with Jeff Lynne.

Believe it or not news reports now say they’re not sure he’s dead.
