This morning I took the streetcar in to work. People were queuing to exit via the rear doors. Except the rear doors weren't working.
At the first stop, a few people tried to get out via the rear doors. The doors didn't open, so they walked up to the front of the bus and got out there instead. There were no calls to the driver to "Please open the doors." There was no one who tried to push the doors open.
People were just too damn polite to do anything other than walk to the front of the bus to get get out.
At the next stop, some more people tried to get out via the rear doors. Again they wouldn't open. So peopel just walked up to the front of the bus and exited.
They too were just too damn polite to do anything else.
A few stops later we hit a major intersection where the subway is. About 15 - 20 people wanted to get out. The first guys stood on the step and the doors didn't open. After a few seconds of inaction, everyone just turned around and walked to the front of the bus to get out. There was no cursing, no huffs of impatience, no calls to the driver to open the doors, no pushing the doors open.
They were just too damn polite to do anything else.
Eventually my stop came. By this point I knew damn well those rear doors weren't going to open. So I walked up to the front of the bus and got out.
Because I too was just too damn polite to do anything else.
