There's a blog which I can't find quickly now where people rate the various GTA hospitals.

When I fell ill last year, I first went to Michael Garron (formerly East General) and they left me waiting for hours. I then called a family member to come pick me up and drive me to Toronto General. They took me in immediately. I was in serious condition and they were angry with Michael Garron for ignoring me. I think the doctor even phoned them.

I was there for a week - they treated me incredibly well. 🙂 I almost didn't want to leave. lol. One of the nurses told me that she drove in to work from north of Newmarket and that she wouldn't work anywhere else.

For political purposes… people will tell Canada has gone to shit… or this person or that person ruined the country…

Reality is…. Compared to the rest of the planet, we are doing great.

A Bachelor of Medicine from the University of Toronto is universally respected, allowing you to work anywhere. It's also in the top five medical schools globally. Which is why so many foreign medical students come here to study.

There is a lot to be improved about the delivery of medicine in Canada, particularly Ontario. Efforts for necessary improvements should not be mitigated by feelings of superiority over the many less fortunate countries medical systems across the world.
Now, political rhetoric by the governing or opposition parties is a different story, especially around election time.

I didn't compare or rank them, Newsweek did.

I just said they were a good hospital and meh meaning I wouldn't contest them being in the top 4.
I think that "meh" usually means "sort of mediocre". #4 in the world is hardly mediocre. It's pretty darn outstanding.

As I inch closer to retirement and a possible move out of Toronto one of the main considerations is access to healthcare, especially potential things like cancer treatment or some other specialized medical need. I have long thought that Eastern Ontario was a complete wasteland for this, but it looks like southwestern Ontario is nearly the same. Pretty much have to find a landing spot that can get you to Toronto or MAYBE Hamilton without too much travel.

Seems like a pretty lucky outcome of being born here and having access to these kinds of facilities. VERY happy that I have not had to make use of them for anything major myself

I have the same concern when I travel. Quality of medical services in a 3rd world country is probably not great. Quality of care in a 1st world country is probably great but really expensive. One of my co-workers was in the U.S. on a business trip. Got ill and was taken to an American hospital. Since he was on a business trip the company's insurance paid the medical costs.
