I am going to be making my annual pilgrimage to Toronto in a couple of weeks and intend to have some "fun". I am comfortable downtown (Yonge Street) and in various parts of Mississauga, but in case my quest takes me off the beaten path, what parts of Toronto are sketchy, or downright dangerous, and should be avoided? :fear:

Canada is quite different from the USA, there are few places in Canadian cities that you can not walk around safely in. The only place I can think of is East Vancouver ( skid row and high drug use). Toronto, ottawa and Montreal are very safe places to visit. Do not be the obvious tourist and flash money around. Stay where there are people and you will have no problems, as in any city around the world.

pineaapple, there are plenty of great neighbourhoods outside of yonge street and mississauga you should check out. queen street west is great, college street, the harbourfront, distillery district, trinity bellwoods park all are great places to start (well if your 25 and single like me). that said these are all fun places to checkout while your here. as far as hobbying goes, stick to our fine toronto agencies and you will be A-OK, Mirage and DreamMakers are my personal fav.

Having grown up in Hamilton, I always get a kick out of Torontonians talking about rough neighbourhoods. I always say, "try Parkdale and Barton on for size in Hamilton", or Pernell.

Never the less I would avoid the following

1. Dundas east of Jarvis (around Filmores). Very sketchy.

2. Jane / Weston / Keele north of the 410

3. Eglinton and Keele

4. Hwy 48, north of the 401

5. Club area (John and Richmond) after 2:00 a.m. is full of shit heads I agree.

None of the above are "that bad", but really no reason to tempt fate, or to go there.

Great areas to see:

1. College Street between Bathurst st. west to Dufferin st.

2. Bloor street west from Yonge to Dufferin (Annex)

3. Queen street East from Coxwell ave to Victoria Park (Beaches) - Boardwalk is great for a late evening stroll.

4. Danforth from Broadview to Pape (Greektown)

5. Bloorwest Village / High Park from Keele st west to Jane st.

6. Yonge and Eglinton.

7. Roncessvalles (Little Poland) and Queen west.

8. Queen west from University to Roncessvalles.

9. St. Lawrence Market Front from Church to Parliament

10 Distillery District - Parliament and Lakeshore.

11. Liberty Village

12. Chinatown is interesting Spadina from Gerrard north to Wellesley.

13. Boy's town (gay area around Church and Wellesley - it's interesting)

if you are OK with various parts of Mississauga, you can go pretty much anywhere

Not really.

You wil die of boredom. Hell is personified in the 905 suburband wasteland belt around Toronto. Nothing but Green fencing Pressure Treated fencing as far as the eye can see and minivans ni every driveway. Lots of minvans and SUVs.

well you seem to go off topic but OK
minivans and SUVs likely mean children in the family
IMHO children are no less fun than all the other good stuff in the world combined
Look at it realistically - what an average Canadian has in his life that is fun and not boredom? Watching a bunch of toothless millionaires on skates pushing a small rubber disc with sticks?
That being said of course Canadians at least have prostitutes and weed, which most Americans don't have, so Americans are even more pathetic

There's a particular strip downtown: on gerard & dundas east of yonge up to parliament. Awfully sketchy area at night - someone I know was mugged there not long ago.
Funny, I was just there for the very first time last week. I agree completely with your assessment.

I agree with "james t kirk". However from my experience, DO NOT GO TO:

Jane and Finch.

Highest rates of gun shots and stab wounds. Similar to the gangster neighborhoods in the States.

is that because the gunshots are too loud that you can't hear the news?
