Got caught by metro's finest today for running a red ( yellow ). Never got a ticket before, so I look down and see 2 fines, a set fine and a Payable amount. So Im a little confused, which one do I pay for?

The "set fine" should be the higher of the two. This is the "actual" fine payable for the offense you are charged with. If you fight the ticket and lose, that's what you'll be charged (plus possible extra court fees).

If you admit that you were legitimately caught, pay the lower amount by the deadline and save a few bucks up-front. However, get ready for your insurance rates to go balistic!

If there's any chance that you're innocent, you might consider fighting the ticket to protect your driving record. There have been numerous threads on this process in the past but there are ways to improve your odds of winning. If you've already got some offenses on your record, you might want to get some professional help (legal, not mental) because too many moving violations can suspend your license or permit your insurance company not to renew your policy.

Seeing as you said it's your first ticket, I don't think it should have a huge impact on your insurance rates. But as zog mentioned, if you'd had a few it would probably be worth fighting.

Fight it.
Sometimes it's over a year before it goes to court, another year for your rates to stay lower. Secondly, the cop may not show up and then the ticket gets tossed. If it's speeding, you have a strong likelihood of getting it lowered.

The set fine is the amount of the infraction. The other amount is the victim surcharge. Add the two together and that is the amount you pay, regardless if you go to court or not.

It is possible to pay more than the indicated amount i.e. court costs, but rarely does the Justice of the Peace levy that additional amount - unless you are arrogant and just plain old wasting the courts time.

Go to court at least you have a chance of beating the charge if the cop does not show up. Or hire one of those tickey busters.

Running a red light is not a minor offence. It carries points 3 (?) plus a real nice fine.
