The 7.3 is the old diesel engine used in the 350 truck. they now have a smaller more efficnet one 5. something or so.
I don't know if the new engine will fit in to the old chasis.

I don't know too much about cars either. Out of experience i can tell you though, that what originally sounded cheaper can be more costly in the long run.
A vital part like the engine should be done by qualified technicians, not by somebody in their back yard. Unless you know the guys history first hand.

My two cents...

The guy at the wreckers you spoke with must have had little brains....lol

A 1994 F 350 with a 7.3 litre diesel makes perfect sense.....though im not totally sure when they started putting turbos on them....i think it was later...maybe 1998?

There is a website dedicated to only Ford trucks....ford-trucks,com....try there....a lot of Ford nuts...

Good luck

way out in left field
Well, the 7.3 was a kick ass diesel and the trucks FLEW with them in.....plus they could pull a house, think they had something crazy like 500 lbs ft of torque....

As stated, this will be costly. Diesels don't come cheap.....I'd say plan on a minimum of 5000 moving upwards from there.....

I'd call a local ford dealership and see what a new crate engine would run you.

If the truck your bro is wanting to put this in, wasn't originally a 7.3 diesel, or is missing some of the parts, you're in for it big time. If someone removed the engine they probably wanted it complete for another truck. If so, you're going to need all the injection parts, the computer, mounts, fuel pump, water pumps, everything. If this is the case you're looking at 10K +.

I don't know what kind of a sis you are but since you seem to not know anything, I'd say to him (while batting your eyelashes coyly): Hey bro, I got you that 7.3 hp engine you asked for........but what are we going to do with an outboard on a plow truck? (*eg*)

$3500.00 sounds ok for a USED motor. But if you want a rebuilt one I would expect to pay more.

Check this out or seach 7.3 rebuilt http://www.rebuiltdieselengines.com/ford-idi.html

Call a Ford dealership and get them to run the VIN. It will tell you exactly what engine came with the truck.

Unlikely you can just shove a bigger motor in there without changing the wiring harness and ECM.

I've always used number nine auto wreckers......grew up in the area and always went back..
As far as the F350 goes..... there are 3 differant engines that will fit..... any mechanic with any knowledge of medium duty trucks should know this..... used engines can be a great deal....HOWEVER you don't know how long they've been sitting....call an engine rebuilder, swap yours for a smaller one and pay $3500-4000......intsalled.....most rebuilders have a shop or a deal with a nearby one...

I sold mine(1990) for $1200 usd in the truck. They had to take it out. It had 129k miles on it. The guys that own the local wrecking yard helped me set the price and told me there was plenty of them around. These engines where made by international for medium duty trucks(small dump trucks and such). They are a good, well built engine. I sold mine because the truck had completely rusted out. One think I've read is that these and other diesels must have proper conditioner used in the cooling system or they will erode cylinder walls and heads. Check with your international deal for info on these engines. I believe they sell a test kit for the coolant.

makes perfect sense...

Bella, you are asking for the right thing. These diesel engines were built by Navistar (International) and were put into everything from school buses to ambulances to Brinks trucks to Ford pickups. I think the 1994 engines were still IDI (indirect injection). I'll guess that about 1996 they changed to direct injection and then some apple cheeked young engineer decided to hang a turbo on it and things got a whole lot more complicated. Any wrecker worth his salt will know what year engines will 'drop in'...and that's what your brother wants, a 'drop in'. Guys...this is an 11 year old plow truck...this is not the place for a crate engine!
Bella, I live far, far away so no point in suggesting the wrecking yards I know,
but even out here in the boonies the wreckers are on line and if they don't have an item in their own yard, they can find it quickly from another.
good hunting,
