Is it true that the winner gets to play the almighty Yankees and the loser gets to play a lesser opponent?

To the 5 hour mark we go...the only thing I dislike about MLB playoffs. Games take forever, I know this is in extra innings, but the league championships always take like 4 hours...or so it seems.

4 hours, 20 minutes. Of course, it was 1.33 games (approximately). It's like overtime playoff hockey, I can watch it all night .

I followed the 9th on the "Gameday" diagram feature on the Blue Jays' site. Fantastic. Twins get out of a jam in the top by inducing Ordonez to line into a dp. Then they put a guy on 2nd with 2 out in the bottom and Mauer up. Pitching change, intentional walk and the next guy up grounds out. Still tied.

Apparently, the game just got better and better and I should have stayed tuned.

Great game. I was hoping the Tigers would win because the Twins will be canon fodder for the Yanks. Detroit would've made it competitive against NY.

Awesome Game, Minnesota did not win a game against Yankees in 2009 (7-0 for Yanks) and have won maybe 3 games over the last few years against them. Yankees expecting to crush tired Twins team at 6pm tomorrow.

Anything can happen in a five game series. There have been many upsets this decade. That being said:

a) The Yanks always kick the Twins ass in the playoffs... hopefully, the randomness of a five game series can finally come true.

b) There are alot of sweeps and quick series in the first round.

Of the 56 first round series since the Wildcard started in 1995.
a staggering amount of 22 have been sweeps.
Only 13 of the 56 series went to give games.

Not sure why there are many sweeps in the first round... its not even always the best team.... I guess its just momentum.

Disappointing to see Tigers lose...

...but they got what they deserved. They played with no sense of urgency over the last 20 games. You rest players when you have the pennant clinched, not when you almost have it. I have no idea what Raburn was thinking in the ninth. Had he let that be a single, instead of trying to make the hi lite reel catch...the game might have been over. The story of the Tigers season could be summed up in the top of the 12th..bases loaded and no outs...and cannot produce one run out of it. You had to know that when the Twins put a man on in the bottom of the inning, they would show the Tigers how to bring a baaserunner home. Poor Fernando Rodney..a closer that was stuck trying to hold the fort for over 3 innings. Leyland must have thought he had no other options in the bullpen. Maybe he could have used a starter?..although that would have totally screwed them had they won the game...better luck next year Motor City kitties....and trade that alcoholic Cabrera...cut his fat ass if you have to....goddamm fuckup......

Baseball is like that. Even with the lack of parity, most games are just a crap shoot. Over 162 games the better teams come out on top, but all of the playoff teams had multi-game slumps during the season. And statistically, the idea that some teams/players are better "in the clutch" (i.e. playoffs) than others, while other teams "choke" is mostly bunk - any apparent difference between regular season performance is easily explained by the small sample size.

Unlike hockey where teams and players pick up the intensity in the playoffs to a level that could not be sustained over 82 games - and games can be decided by grit, hustle and determination, baseball is pretty much the same during the season, in a pennant race or in the playoffs. The only real difference is that in the playoffs one is less concerned with burning out one's top pitchers, and no one is concerned with developing young players. So take any random 3-5 game stretch from the Yankees' schedule and that will give you an idea of how well you can expect them to play - the odds are that the Yankees will win, but it will be no surprise if they lose or are even swept.

Playoff teams have at least two good starting pitchers and can win a short three gamer without having to go too deep into their starting rotation. Not to mention that there is usually an off day somewhere in the midst of the first three games which helps a team that is not deep pitching wise.

I would prefer a 4/7 game series with no off days - They could accomodate that type of series in the same time frame as the 3/5.

I totally agree.
