U.S. Presidential Election: A perfect example of "The Medium is the Message"...

and, ultimately, this election may simply be decided by voters based on their perception of the two presidential contenders, Mr. Bush and Mr. Kerry.

As Marshall McLuhan's profound statement implies; it is not what the messenger says that matters so much, but how the messenger is perceived.

Your thoughts?

Precisely. Which is why candidates, and especially national candidates, are increasingly reluctant to say or propose anything meaningful. Better to look good than piss anyone off. Lincoln could not be elected president by todays standards. Wait a minute, Kerry kinda looks like Lincoln.........uh oh........but then Bush looks like Alfred E. Nueman. Whew......dodged that bullet.

OK, a little bit of both. Ugly is as ugly does. Wait, that's a little harsh. Homely is as homely does.

As opposed to what? Voters' ability to mind-read? Of course it will be decided by perception. We use that every day in every situation. What I would do about global warming or the war on terrorism is irrelevant b/c I'm not running. But my perception of what Bush/Kerry would do is how I might base my vote... (if I had one).

Now, if you meant to ask about perceptions of personality, that's a whole 'nother issue.

Weird - last night I was watching a re-run of King of the Hill and it was about the last US election. It was about the turmoil Hank Hill was having about voting since George W had such a limp hand shake. Up until that point Hank "believed" in only the issues but after he shook George's "limp cold fish hand he almost didn't vote. Strange the thing that can influence us.
