There ain't no "justs". Done that with my laptop, not gonna run cables between the rooms to do it with the desktop. A wireless connection would take care of that, besides I'm not happy with the notebook on the floor, wired up to the TV. Still leaves me with a lapful of remotes, and now—portable or desktop—I've added a keyboard, secondary screen and a pointing device.Just connect your desktop VGA output to your tv directly. There are converters if your tv has no VGA input.
Actually, you didn't answer correctly. He wants a network aware upconverting dvd player. Last I checked, the media boxes you speak of don't have optical drives installed in them.Already answered. Both the Asus O!Play Air and WD TV Live will do what you want. I think the trade-off between the two is that the Asus handles more formats, and the WD has better UI.

The Trinitron can't change aspect ratios so some of the movies you watch are going to be cut off or wrongly formatted. Just make sure that whichever you buy can output to your antiquated "television set" as they used to be called![]()
