Never had a problem before WTF!!!! I seem to be staying in TO for the now. SO any new finds to brighten my morning?? BTW if anyone has been to martinique please PM me to let me know what your experience was, if I get enough positive responses I will try again next month. Thanks, and if anyone goes to the states and sees a US customs agent named Sojo, PLEASE kick him in the nuts for me. Ta...

He , Everlast--you should never go through the USA,its a pain in the you know where.
I Travel a lot,my Passport looks like a flowergarden,with all the Stamps.
I never ever travel through the states-use a U.S. carrier,or fly via a U.S. Port.To much trouble, they are nuts. And,if you have to go there,do not ever admit, that you participate in that dirty activity called SEX.If you do admit to this very Human ACT--you will be brandet a Pervert, and you carried Womans undies--weeeell,your ass is in a sling.
The Travel Agents will tell you, that you have to fly through Miami, well, that just is not so.There are many flights, without going through the states, believe me.Have Fun...

It's called processing . At least that's what I was told last time I was held up at the US boarder. After they tore my car apart, scrutinized and question me to the ninth degree about my ID, asking me again over and over why was I traveling to The States. Then after warning me never to return they had me wait for a least two hours before allowing me to drive back into Canada; claiming they were processing my paperwork. NEVER AGAIN! :(

Next time, carry only ONE passport. It gets too confusing for some of the Customs officers at times. I recall the one time I travelled with an elderly couple who claimed they were both Canadian and British citizens, and all hell broke loose.

Also, you might have had the great fortune of being the random victim of the Witching Hour. Bear in mind that these officers are only human and a little human kindness and courtesy can go a long way to help ease the border crossing. From personal experience, I know it helps.

yes 2 hours seems in line,7 though? You can request to leave the country as technically you have not entered. The only reason to wait is to see what they come up with, lol, most times you are waiting cause they forgot about you.
If there is one thing homeland security has taught me,is to stay in Canada more now then ever.

It's their country...Their rules. You want to go...you follow their rules. Simple.

Why the hell would you travel with two passports? That's asking for trouble.
Why would that now be? Has the patriot act made dual citizenship illegal?

Or what rule are you referring to?

The fact that as a Canadian, you have no "right" to enter the US.
They may choose to allow you in, or not.
Don't think dual citazenship is illegal, but why I heavens name would you make a big deal about it when traveling to the US?
Do people not read about the tough new rules at the US Customs?

Since 9/11, I must have been back and forth to the States about 40 times.
You gotta know the territory when going through customs.
If you draw any attention to yourself, you will be detained.
Act smart, and keep a low profile.Or then of course you could go somewhere else.

That's funny... I had a much easier time with US Customs than I did with Canadian Customs!

I was in Vancouver and decided to take a trip to Seattle and Redmond to sight see, so I get to the border and the US Customs asks me the basic questions, what am I doing here, for how long, by myself, etc. and he waves me through. No problems. At night, after my sightseeing, I come back and go through Canadian Customs, attitudey bitch asks me the same questions but with more suspicion:

Her: Where did you go?
Me: Seattle
Her: Why?
Me: To sightsee
Her: By yourself?
Me: Yes
Her: Louder!
Me: YES (I guess she couldn't hear me)
Her: Why do you have an Alberta's driver's license, Ontario birth certificate, and BC rental car?
Me: Cuz I live and drive in AB, born in ON, and in BC right now.
Her: Anything to declare?
Me: Nothing
Her: Pop the trunk (proceeds to tear it apart)

Let's me through. Yeesh eh? What's so suspicious about a single, 6'2" dude, dressed in black, carrying no bags, driving a BC plated rental, with an AB driver's license, and ON birth cert? Really.

U.S. customs agents have always been pricks but since 9/11 it's only gotten worse. I remember being on a bus crossing over to the U.S. and this one poor sap named Mohammed who was going to some mid western state for a vaction got pulled aside and given the serious grief.

OK here's a funny story. I'm at the Can/US border, they decide to check all my bags thoroughly. Custom agents look like they got a hard-on to make quota for number of Canadians arrested this week. Well I'm clean so they eventually let me go on through. Then as I walk through a door with all my bags one of my bags hits something and starts BEEPING. You see I had a digital metronome which I use for music practise and it beeps in time...much like the sound of a digital timer for a bomb. Well...I almost had a heart attack right there and then! Thankfully I was on my way out the office and no agent herd the beeping.

Scared the hell outta me.

Rule 1: Don't argue with the customs officer
Rule 2: Only say and answer the minimum possible
Rule 3: See Rule 1

The worst you can do is cross the border as a single white male (well...second worst)
Its like you become the mother of all profiles. You might as well have bullseye painted on your forehead.

The worst is to have a name like Abdul or Ahmed, be slightly tanned and carry a Yemeni passport.

US Customs/Immigration staff are usually Army Trained

US Customs/Immigration guys are usually ex Army, many ex Vietnam and very, very protective of their country. They are concerned with immigration, customs not a big deal. Show them respect and answer their questions with a serious face.

Canadian Customs/Immigration, many are just out of high school, mostly concerned with customs, what cheap stuff you are bringing back to Canada from the US. Immigration is really secondary. It is just a job to these people they could not care less about their country. The few that have attitude? They can be dealt with very easily by saying the right thing or smiling throughout the process ...just show them you are not intimidated.

I really have a very relaxed attitude when I come into Canada because I know they cannot intimidate me but going into the US... you better have your shit in order from the getgo or you will hear it from these guys.

They sure accomplished their goal of intimidating you.

At least in some cases you have the right to enter the US. Remember the free trade agreement?

I know, I know, I spent 20 years working for US companies, entering the US twice a week. One day I encountered an immigration officer, who I knew as a father of one of my sons teammates on a baseball team. He was just as big a prick as the other ones.
