I know this may shock some of you with the amount of knowledge I have passed on to others but I have a question:

I connect various items through my USB ports. When I connect my MP3 HDD player through my usb, I get a popup that says I should connect it through my high speed ports and then gives me a window listing them.

I have the Player connected to a 4 usb extension into a port in the back of my pc.

Am I missing something? I thought all the ports were the same?

If you are getting that popup, you have USB 1 or 1.1 installed, which is basically great for your keyboard and not much else. Go buy a 4 port USB 2.0 PCI board at Tiger Direct, or spend a few more bucks and get a combo USB/Firewire board.

USB is 12 mbs, USB takes bursts up to 480 mbs. Firewire can handle sustained 400 mbs transfers, so it is better for video.

I assume you're running XP? I seem to get that quite often myself. I find that trying different ports and/or unplugging devices on the other usb ports works. Don't know why.

I read a few months ago on the MS site that when SP2 came out, the usb drivers may not update properly and that a fix would eventually come out. I haven't checked for one lately. It also suggested unplugging the usb connection (interntally) and reconnecting so that drivers would update themselves that way. I haven't tried that fix either though.

Ah, that's the ticket....my 4 port extension is only 1.1 hence, why it's slow....I'm going to try and plug my USB stuff directly into the mobo port and see what happens....

Thanks for the input....

Yup, that was it!!! just goes to show you: you can learn something new everyday!

Or, you can just buy a Mac. A computer that just works.
