A friend is looking to replace a dead WinXP machine, and is wondering whether to stick with XP Pro, or move to Vista. When Vista first released, most advice I had heard was to at least defer upgrading. Is that still the consensus?

Vista takes more resources than XP Pro, so fast processors, drives and at least 2 GB of RAM. Of course if your friend is looking at a new PC then it probably already comes with Vista.

I've been using Vista since January with no problems, although at the beginning I had some trouble getting compatible drivers for things like my brand new printer. Got pasts all those problems eventually.

Cobster,
If you are happy with the laptop just blow out Vista and put XP in. Read that's what some are doing who are still underwelmed with Vista.
I'm in no hurry to get Vista and very happy with XP still.

I have a notebook with Vista and doesn't seem to be to bad, with the exception of one update.. If i do that update it fucks up Yahoo Messenger so i can't click on any links. But then again i don't do alot on the notebook but surf in front of the TV... All my main work is done on my towers and they still run XP Corporate

I'm gonna try to sell it.
What gets me is, I bought a copy of Vista Premium that's sitting here waiting to be installed, but I may not do it afterall. lol
Love my XP Pro.

yeah, i like my XP Pro too... but, my computer was a Costco clearance item back in 2003. i never did get the original installation disk so I am scared to reformat my Hard Drive... I'm slowly waiting till I absolutely need to. but, finding a new computer with XPPro is getting difficult.

I was browsing the Dell website yesterday and saw that they will still configure a PC with Win XP. I bet a lot of the other vendors will as well.

No install disk is needed to re-install XP

I discovered a neat way around re-installing XP PRO without having an install disk.

Months ago I needed more room so I got a Seagate HDD and used it as an external HDD. Seagate has this phenomenal 'Disc Wizzard' for Windows, program included with all their HDDs. It allows you to transfer all your data from one drive to the exteral HDD, including the entire OS.
First I formatted then partitioned the new HDD, it took minutes, then I transfered the data from the old to the new HDD.
This transfer took 17 minutes the last time I did it. I've done this a few times so far. Then you just swap the HDDs and change the jumper settings on the drive and bingo you're done!
Since you transfered all data over, all the XP endless updates were included along with all other programs and browsers and whatever else you were using. This method beats going by the book where you format then install XP with a disc then update XP then spend the day reinstalling all other programs you were using disc, by disc, by disc.
I saved my old 8 Gig HD with XP on it and this old HDD has in effect become my emergency re-install disc.

I still dont understand why people by machines like dell, hp.
ibm, compaq etc.
In my opinion much easier to buy/build a clone with disks and drivers from a computer store that you can trust and YOU find friendly
and will offer support.
Laptops are a different animal.
Sorry about the dell it should have no problems running Vista must be a dell thing:)
