I got an interesting PM from a well-known and respected SP, and by the time I had finished writing the response, I had this mess (which was far longer than the 1000 character maximum for PM's) in front of me.
As I said in the "miranda" thread, I'm all for SP's posting on the boards. I even recognize the need for SP's to respond to reviews of themselves. However, I do believe that the integrity of the board deteriorates when a bad review degenerates into a flaming of the original reviewer because of disagreement.
As an SP, you have to accept the fact that you have no control over the reviews, except that you can "request" no review, or even "request" a good review. Either of these situations is shilling, IMO. And as such, has no place on the board.
The whole concept of the review system has inherent flaws. Any review is subjective. What's the difference between good DATY and so-so DATY? Opinion. That's why the poster's previous posting history has such a bearing in the perceived validity of the review.
If I have been with 10 so-so SP's and then go on a date with you, even if you're only marginally better, you are going to get a glowing review because compared to the others you were awesome.
I think a basic review template is in order. Basic information as well as a section based on the "YMMV" or subjective information. And I think the moderators should have broad discretionary powers to delete any review that fails to contain at least the minimum information.
TERB's responsibility is for the people (lurkers or otherwise) to get the correct information. If it is time to step on some toes, so be it.
