I'm considering starting a website about USA. Basically a place where people can mouth off. I might also try to inject some left-wing Canadian/European idiology into the mix. There would be editorial control so that it wouldn't stoop too far into the toilet.
"The Devil You Know" is an ironic title insinuating that USA isn't so bad after all. Better than the devil you don't know.
If I do launch the site it would probably happen in September, maybe on the 11th.
Below is the preamble. It is meant to be stimulating yet inoffensive. Intelligent yet streetsmart. How does it read?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to "The Devil You Know"
"The Devil You Know" is a website about the United States of America of America. Past, present and future. Here is the the place for you to speak out.
USA is great country. That is undeniable. It is a large country. It is a populous country. It is a diverse country. And it has a large military. What about its character? What abouts its culture? What about its institutions? What about its urban areas? What about its park lands? Are they great?
America truly is 300 million different things. Each person is a part of the melting pot. While the president has a great deal of power, especially in foreign affairs, he really is powerless in so many ways. America was designed to have distributed power and indeed that is true. The federal government is splintered into many agencies and has to compete for authority with many international organizations, states, cities and countries.
The media and special interest groups also are important. Church Groups, Oil companies, TV channels. Each has a following. No ethnic group is dominant. Not only are there millions of Blacks and Latinos is USA, there also are huge Italian, Irish, Arab and Chinese pockets. Ross Perot, Bill Gates, Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, Nelson Farrakhan, Emimen, Brittney Spears and Rachel Green, each has a role in the shaping of America. Are these figures representative of America at all, simply cartoon characters, or puppets of some sinister group?
What is an American anyway? Is there truly a definitive answer?
