* In 20 minutes your blood pressure will drop back down to normal.

* In 8 hours the carbon monoxide (a toxic gas) levels in your blood stream will drop by half, and oxygen levels will return to normal.

* In 48 hours your chance of having a heart attack will have decreased. All nicotine will have left your body. Your sense of taste and smell will return to a normal level.

* In 72 hours your bronchial tubes will relax, and your energy levels will increase.

* In 2 weeks your circulation will increase, and it will continue to improve for the next 10 weeks.

* In three to nine months coughs, wheezing and breathing problems will dissipate as your lung capacity improves by 10%.

* In 1 year your risk of having a heart attack will have dropped by half.

* In 5 years your risk of having a stroke returns to that of a non-smoker.

* In 10 years your risk of lung cancer will have returned to that of a non-smoker.

* In 15 years your risk of heart attack will have returned to that of a non-smoker.

I have been quit now over 5 years. Now I only have to worry about everyone elses somke killing me lol. The one thing I noticed was how much your sense of smell increases. I used Zyban. I still have the odd craving but having had breathing issues when I smoked that I don't have now is enough to keep me quit.

I am trying to quit right now. It will be two weeks on Tuesday. Wish me luck.
To those non-smokers: lighten up (no pun intended). If someone wants to quit, hey thats great
But lately I noticed non-smokers look down on smokers like they had just taken a public dump when they light up. Especially in Western Canada. (self righteous, know it all, oil rich bastards).
My reasons for quiting are related to my long term health, but there is a lot of social pressures,
Recently I met a very attractive and seemingly nice lady who appeared quite interested. Interested until she determined I was a smoker, she got turned right off and proceeded to deliver a 30 min lecture on the evils of the weed. Yes she was right, however, the message was delivered in such a condescending tone/ manner, that all I could think of was:
a) oh, shit, no Helmut wash from her
b) get me away from this know it all
c) what else is she not going to like about my lifestyle
d) how shallow to make a judgment on a person based on one (yes i will admit bad ) habit rather than what I believe in, what I define as fun and how I treat others

as a non smoker I think you are right about this. My SO smokes so does my mom and brother. I could'nt care less. It's just not for me. Everyone has a vice, be it sex booze drugs or even just washing your hands repeatedly....mine is red wine. I like a good glass or 2 with dinner or perhaps splitting a bottle (ok maybe 2) with a friend or my SO on the weekends ;)

I'm convinced that most people really don't enjoy those things at first. I think that for social reasons they just perservere long enough for the chemical dependency to take root. Then it becomes a psychological crutch as well.

Fourtunately I was practically immune to peer pressure for most of my life - the benfit of my delusional superiority complex. I always believed that other people should mold themselves to my liking, not the other way around.

I've liked wine & certain liqeuers since I was a kid, but I've never felt any real urge for them - I can easily go weeks or months without missing it at all - nor would I ever want more than two glasses of wine, or more than two doubles of my favourite liqeuer in a day.

I liked flavoured cigars when I tried them in 1998, I smoked them with my Ex once or twice a month when taking breaks form lenghty lovemaking sessions - haven't had one for 6 years now (No cigar or a lengthy lovemaking session LOL )
