I havent been downtown in the daytime in a long time

forgot how crazy they are

how do these guys even get a license is beyond me

I remember once this guy purposely cut us off and was trying to push us into the curb lane
got his numbers called the company and they said that there is nothing they can do

WTF!
half of them dont speak english
dont know how to get to where you want to go
or they pretend that they do and tell you its a shorter route but it ends up costing you more than usual

what has this world come to?

I've heard that they are underpaid and have to deal with a lot of BS and (sometimes) abuse, so they have to essentially learn how to be assholes in order to out-asshole the other assholes
it's a vicious circle

Many years ago - I had a job in company that required some very late night work by some young ladies in public relations. Their opinion was that the cab drivers could speak English too well. The were subjected to descriptions for cabbies love life and propositioned on a regular basis. It was so bad that if had a car downtown you loaded every one and drove them home to avoid this issue.

Hey, on a club night, after 2:00 AM, I like to cruise around and try to pick up drunk girls and drive them home ... it's fun ... only if they don't throw up on the dash. hehe

I find that's simply untrue. I've always known NYC cab drivers to be courteous, never try to rip you off. Maybe if you're a fellow driver they're rude, but I've never experienced it as a rider.

Many years ago I spent some time driving a taxi in Toronto. Technically, they are not paid. They pay an owner (usually through an agent) for the use of the cab for a shift and keep the difference between gas and what they take in. The money is bad but I knew many people who were collecting EI or welfare at the same time (and not reporting their taxi income) so their income is often higher than it seems. Moreover, given it is a cash business, I doubt if many were completely honest on their income tax. At the time I recall a statistic that 90% of new drivers don't last the first 3 months. Thus, many are not doing it long enough to become good. This was a number of years ago so things may have changed but I agree that it is a crapy job.
