I have a hot date on a weeknight in downtown Toronto. I'm from out of town. She mentioned restaurants like Splendido, Rain, The Fifth, Canoe, and Avalon. I looked at some of these menus and for a 3 course meal with tip, I'm thinking $200 to $300

Yes I'm looking for a dress up dinner, but for more around the $100 - $150 price range including appetizer, main, dessert and wine for the two of us. I don't think she's the kind who likes dutch treat.

Is there such thing in downtown TO? Can anyone recommend a place?

...on what you mean by "dress up", but if her idea of dress up are places like Splendio and Rain, the answer to your question is "no".

And there was NO WAY you were getting out of either of those places for $200. Think more like $400...

Based on your price range I would suggest this. Great food, good atmosphere and reasonably priced.

If you want to spend $200 I would go to Barberian's

...this girl actually has any taste (versus her just throwing names of places she could never afford out there so that she can later tell her friends where this guy took her), she WILL NOT like Ilfornello.

Its a chain, for heaven sake. The food there is terrible for the price, it is loud, it is always crowded, and I would NOT describe it as 'dress up", though there is no reason why you wouldn't / couldn't.

Show me someone who likes the food at "Ilfornello" and I will show you someone who has never been to a decent Italian restaurant. Of course, this is Toronto...few people here know good food.

For the OP...I would need some more background. Yes, there are places to go in your price range - places where the food is GOOD ("Fred's Not Here" comes to mind, another would be "Swan"). But these places aren't comparable to the ones you listed...so...what is going to be more important...the quality of the food and the dining experience, or the price range?

...a pretty pathetic life if you are in your...what...70's did someone say....and your idea of fun on Saturday night is to drink yourself into a stupor and troll internet boards...

You know, there are circumstances where suicide actually might be something worth while. You know, end the pain and all that.

You are going to have a hard time having 3 courses with wine in a "dress up" downtown restaurant for $150. The only ones I can think of are Reds Bistro - they have a good selection of wine by the glass, and Canyon Creek Chop House which also has a fixed price menu which might meet your budget. Google them and check out the menus.

Jump on Wellington. If you dont go overboard on the wine, you could do it with $200.

Judging by her tastes and your price range, I'd say you're in trouble.

A decent - not even good - bottle of wine is $100. Appetizer $15 each. Entree $40 each. Coffee/dessert $12 each. Right in the original price range for Splendido, etc., for an average restaurant.

I think you need to give us more info. Tell us about this girl. What kind of food are you thinking of? Atmosphere? Location in downtown?

I can't say I'm familiar with the places named (I don't make it to T-dot that frequently for dinner), but I've enjoyed Urban on King West. And I've heard good things about Nota Bene on Queen West.

On the other hand, Ruth's Chris Steakhouse might not meet your budgetary targets.

Was that really called for? Seriously man, sometimes I wonder wtf your deal is...

I don't think you're qualified to comment on the majority of Torontonians any more than I am about Glaswegians, Londoners, Chicago-ans, New Yorkers or Montrealers - cities I've lived or spent a lot of time in.

I agree that Il Fornello is no better than East Side Marios or any other chain restaurant. But since it was only one poster (on TERB) that felt the need to recommend it, there was no need to paint all Torontonians with your ignorant brush.

You really should tone down your anti-Toronto, anti-Canadian, anti-TERB rhetoric a bit man... sometimes it's totally uncalled for and uncool.

just remember, once you take her to this "high end" place...your gonna have a new bar to surpass for the next time...apart from that, some places I normally hit up for different reasons

Panorama (its not expensive but has a good view)
Annona
Wish 3
Caju
Boiler House
Benihanna (sp?) - I've been here many times and to the locations in the US, personally cant go wrong and the girls I take usually love the "show"
Truffles (have not been there in a while)

There are many options in Toronto, dressing up also is pretty vauge...

Are you trying to go to to a place that is out of the way but high end? a specific cuisine? - I have dressed up going to 3 star places becuase it was where my business meeting would lead, and have done the opposite and walked into truffles with jeans and a blazer...so that part is up to you personally.

Jesus Almighty, the things some guys have to do to try to get some action. To Shyguy: DO NOT take her to some super fancy expensive place. Honestly, she recommended these places to get a free meal. You're going to feel like a fool and you will feel USED.

Just take her to Baton Rouge or some Pan-Asian place, for god's sake, have fun, and proceed from there. I'm with Uzo on this one, don't set the bar to high for yourself. Not on the first date. Don't be a meal ticket

Le Select Bistro

Le Select Bistro, on Wellington just west of Spadina, seems to be what you're looking for. Beautiful place, worth dressing up, great wine selection and the prices are reasonable. Excellent food.
