We are excited to announce an upcoming night of performance by and for sex workers!

Whores on Top: Celebrating the Talents of Sex Workers in our Community
Wednesday, October 21, 2009 7:30pm-10:30pm
Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen Street West, Toronto

We are planning this night for sex workers to share their work, ideas, and talents. Our definition of sex work is broad and includes erotic/exotic dancers, porn stars, prostitutes (including street workers and escorts) pro Doms and subs, BDSM/fetish workers, massage attendants, etc... erotic workers of all genres, races, classes and gender representations are invited to share their talents.

We are still seeking performers in order to make the show a diverse event and we are prioritizing performances by sex workers who identify as working class, people of colour, or Aboriginal, Inuit, Metis status, or otherwise diverse and outside of the white-middle-class norm. If you or anyone you know of would like to share their art, words, or voice please put them in touch with Nish frock_rock@hotmail.com

We are organizing this event with the aim towards building a solid working class-led, anti-racist sex worker movement and striving to create a space that is welcoming to include the voices of all experiences within sex work without judgement or hierarchy. Performances do not have to be about sex work, although the night will be sex work positive and performers must have been involved in sex work in one of the broad forms at some point. We realize that being an out sex worker comes with privilege and that not everyone feels safe doing so. If you would like to perform but have concerns about being out, please contact one of the organizers to discuss options. Our ultimate goal is to make the space as inclusive and safe as possible for everyone!

Whores on Top will be hosted by Granny Boots, a queer entertainment event presented each Wednesday by the Gladstone Hotel.

The event is from 7:30 sharp and ends at 10:30pm. We are soliciting a variety of performances by sex workers, including but not limited to written pieces, songs, dance, drama, comedy, stories, rants, information sharing, project sharing, burlesque, video, etc. Do you want to perform or know someone who does? The performances will be on a volunteer basis, as we are donating the event funds to a sex worker organization called Women's Network for Unity (see below).

http://wnu.womynsagenda.org/

Please send us your submissions ASAP and/or let us know how you would like to contribute to the event.

Please include:
1- Name of Performer (as you would like to see it in promotion)
2- Desired Length of Performance
3- Description or sample of performance material

Each performer will have approx. 5-10 minutes to perform.

We also plan on having this event so that sex workers can network and share information about local projects, stories and strategies. There will be an information/media/merch table where sex workers will be selling zines, t-shirts, art and other products as well as information about community organizations that support sex workers. If you have anything to contribute to the table, please contact us!

Admission to Whores on Top at Granny Boots is free. We will donate organizing funds offered by the Gladstone to the Women's Network For Unity womynsagenda.org, a grassroots collective of sex workers in Cambodia who are organizing against anti-trafficking policies and experimental drug trials that target sex workers.

Please note the Gladstone Hotel is an accessible space, with ramps and an accessible nongendered toilet. For more information, please contact Tori Jezebel tori.soso@gmail.com

Not trying to be negative and I certainly wish you all the best with your endeavour, but aren't the two statements above a little contradictory?

No. Actively trying to create space for the voice and performance of people who are typically marginalized and less heard/seen (not only by their profession as sex workers, but by their race, nationality, class, gender, etc.) doesn't exclude those with more privileged social status.

Yes, they are 100% contradictory. When they say they are creating an event without hierarchy, they actually mean that there is a well defined hierarchy, but it is based on their values, not someone elses. To me, that is fine, it is their event, and they can have whatever hierarchy they want.
