Looks like it's back to old-school roll-your-own machine for the Linux crowd:

All you need to is format and install Linux....;)
Or just install a second HDD and load Linux on it.


If anything that shows how much M$ fears Linux!

As I said, build your own machine. You seem to have a comprehension problem.

BTW, what happens if you have a Win 8 laptop? No more dual-booting there, eh?

Actually, according to this article:

It doesn't say much (or it may because I only skimmed the article) about the install a second HDD with Linux option but if the boot process is locked down then even that won't work.

Sounds like some folks ARE going to make lots of money suing M$ over this as they did years ago over the IE browser fiasco lockdown!....:D

Well, your own ideas didn't pan out very well did they?

Given more thought, though, my own idea of rolling your own desktop and loading Linux on may not work if the motherboard is certified with a Win 8 logo on it.

In the end, it looks like MS may actually have found a way to marginalize desktop Linux even more! Although, I don't see what the point is since desktop Linux is already on its deathbed.

Like I said that's a monopoly and an illegal restraint that M$ will lose in the Courts!....:cool:

MS would argue that they don't have a monopoly in desktop computing because Apple holds an even larger market share now.

And, in any case, no one is preventing Linux fanbois from loading on their fav OS. They just have to find a motherboard manufacturer who is willing to come out with a Linux version. That may be hard to do given how small the desktop Linux market is and even smaller if MS really puts the squeeze on.

It would be even worse on the notebook side because I don't see any Linux-specific machines out there.

M$ tried that SAME bogus BS argument in the browser wars in the past and LOST in the courts! Same thing will happen again....;)

It may or may not be the same argument but it will take years to drag through the courts assuming that anyone even bothers. In the meantime, Linux will be locked out while MS and Apple will keep selling millions of computers.

Meh.. Any motherboard that needs to run a server OS has to support Linux as that is a big chunk of the market for good reason, it's a way better server OS than MS or Apple.. There will be alternatives.

what pisses me off is that it is nearly impossible to walk into most places and buy a computer which isn't all whored by Microsoft...lame having to buy a netbook, knowing that I paid for Windows 7 Starter, but at least it felt good to wipe the drive of it.

Couple of things, okay, a couple plus one.

1) Don't care, love my current build and setup and I JUST got onto Windows 7 about 6 months ago - XP for quite awhile (7+ years) and I honestly don't like the look of Win8.
2) Do you honestly think that the Linux community won't figure out a way around this? They're not exactly "click & go" type people (like MS and Mac users), they enjoy tweaking, customizing their own OS, problem solving.

3) You're really amped about anything anti-Linux now huh Dan'? lol
After B4U's post, then mine and being shot down in replies, you've lost your marbles. lol
Just enjoy your overpriced UNIX based machine and be happy, just think, your money will help build the mother ship in Cali'. :)

Yep. I bought a used laptop a few months ago, and tried to request a "bare metal" price for the thing because I planned to immediately reformat the HD and install Linux.

You can guess how far I got with that...
