Windows 98/98 SE question

Ok, before we start , I don't want anyone to suggest scrappng the machine, buying Vista or Xp, all I'm looking for is assistance on my question as follows.
A friend has purchased a P1 laptop loaded with win98 first edition, he wants to use the machine for some home automation etc, but requires minimum WIn 98 SE for what he wants to do. There is a very small hd and likely very little ram in it so anything more than win 98 is pretty much out of the question,on top of that he has a 98SE disc.
Question is, will 98 SE overlay the original OS maintaining drivers etc, or does he need to format & do a clean install?
On a clean install, what issues could be expected regarding drivers etc?
any help is greatly appreciated.

Will it ask him for one of the the original win95 disks before it will let him upgrade?

I'm not sure,he hasnt done anything with respect to trying to upgrade, also I think the machine came with the original 98 disc

Should be OK then.
