Wisdom Teeth Extraction...

My dentist says he want's all four out. One is slightly infected & I have been put on anitbiotics for the infection for one week. My dentist would like to scehdule the extractions no later than a month from now. I am sure some of the members have had this procedure done before? Is it really that bad? I had one moller pulled out when I was a child & it wasn't pleasant as I recall. Same type of thing? I will be having the proceudre done in his office under a local freezing.

It seems to be totally different for different people. I had all four pulled and was pretty much out of commission (in pain and on drugs) for three days. other people I know have been just fine the same day. Maybe it depends on the anesthetic? I was completely under.

I'd go completely under if I was you, if it's an option, I was but that was several years ago.

Yes, go with sedation for wisdom teeth extraction. I had mine removed a year ago: you fall asleep, wake up about an hour later and it's all over. I had very little pain and very little bleeding. Had tylenol 3's but didn't really need them.

I was consious, but was given a valium an hour or so before. I remember feeling no pain at all, and the recovery was not to bad either. I did not have to take the T3's that were given to me.

When I was a baby I got circumsised, that hurt so much I couldn't walk for a year.

My exact same experience.

No grief whatsoever.

I developed an infection due to an impacted wisdom tooth, and the dentist yanked it in the chair. I only felt the pressure, but I have to tell you, the sounds and the pulling and his grunting were terrible to put up with. The tooth broke apart and he had to dig around for the pieces. My mouth was sore for a day, but I went immediately back to work and did not need the pain killers.

He did not want to do the remaining teeth in the chair, and booked me into the hospital for the full knocked out approach.

Waking up was the worst part of it, I was coughing a lot because of the gas. My mouth was only moderately swollen and I had minor discomfort for a couple of days.

The good part was that back in the day, OHIP covered the extraction in hospital. Sadly, no more.

go out fully.....picture some one pulling on your teeth while you look at them...then see the tooth in the plyers as it comes out of your mouth....what if they have to do some extra things...like to get that tricky tooth and disslocate your jaw...they did that to me......I could not eat anything bigger than a french fry for a week....
I was out cold...thank God for that....

When I had mine removed I went to an oral surgeon. No pun intended here either. They put me under and there was very little pain after. Took a couple tylenol 3's later the same day but that was all.

I had mine done a while back and they gave me the gas. I couldn't even count to 10 before I was out. However... I was still semi-conscious partway through the procedure and could sorta see and definitely hear what was going on. I felt no pain, but I will never forget the feeling of the pliers in my mouth and the doctor rocking them back and forth to rip (and it was ripping) the teeth out. Not a very pleasant memory.

Afterwards they gave me tylenol 3s but they made me sick. I couldn't take more than one and I was knocked out for the rest of that day as well as the next.

I would clear your schedule for 2-3 days, just to be on the safe side.

I have to get my two top wisdom teeth out soon...I'm terrified of the pain! LOL It is very different for different people. I know some people are over it in a couple of days but my sister was in agony for two weeks. :( It's a good thing I'm a soup fanatic!

My dentist also says I should consider getting my bottom ones out as well but I got a second opinion from another dentist and he says they look like they came in perfectly. The funny thing is that my dentist put fillings in both of my bottom wisdom teeth (I had cavities in both - they tend to decay easily because they're hard to brush) and now less than two years later, she says they should be pulled! So what did I pay for the fillings for!? I think they're always just after our money...lol.

When I was a kid I had to have two teeth pulled (they didn't want to make way for my adult teeth) and the dentist was a butcher who didn't use nearly enough freezing so when I found out I had to have my wisdom tooth pulled (only got one, guess I'm not too wise <grin>) I was a tad apprehensive to say the least.

I related my fears to my dentist and he made darn sure that I was good and frozen before he started (hell I think my ear was numb). He explained what he was going to do (not graphically) and warned me that it was going to "feel and sound wierd, but it should not hurt and to let him know immediately if it did". He was right on all counts, I've had more discomfort having fillings done than I felt when he extracted the tooth.

That night I (carefully) had a sandwich for dinner and only used regular Advil for the discomfort. But I have a fairly high threshold for pain so YMMV.

In my case the thinking about it was far worse than the reality.

I had an oral surgeon remove all four while under sedation (darvon drip, nitrous and a numbing agent). It couldn't have been any easier. Nobody has mentioned the dreaded "dry sockets" yet. Not sure what that's all about but a warm salt water rinse every few hours is suggested to avoid post surgical issues.

My teeth are comming in straight, expect for the bottoms ones that are a little tilted. My dentist said the teeth should come out fairly easily. Like JessieMae, I am a little freaked of going under. I would like to be awake.

I had all 4 out. Going in I was very worried because friends that had it done were in pain for days. Was given valium, then the gas, also had a few drinks first but I wouldn't recommend that. Anyway, after a 24 hour nap I played hockey and ate burgers.

Yeah really it's no big deal. The extracting is actually the most painless part. It does ache for a while after though but it goes away soon enough.

I had all four done in a hospital with a general. Afterwards the surgeon said we was glad he did not try in his office as he really had to hack to get them out. I got dry socket, where they get infected. I was on antibiotics and felt like total crap and could not work for a week. They still erupt once in a while, one of the sockets opens up then heals again.

My wife had hers done, she said that the surgeon was so handsome that she would have fucked him instantly if he had asked, it made the process pleasant. I don't think it would have made it any more pleasant for me.
