Today, in front of thousands of rabid sports fans donning foam hot dog hats and other odd related paraphernalia, Joey Chestnut reclaimed his World Title by eating 70 Nathans hot dogs and buns, surpassing Matt Stonie's effort by 17. The 70 hot dogs consumed was a new world record for this competition, which celebrated its 100th anniversary this July 4. Joey did, however, consume 73 1/2 hotdogs last month in the qualifying round.

It was a great achievement for Joey "Jaws" Chestnut, who was champion for eight consecutive years until his upset at the hands of Matt "Megatoad" Stonie last year.

Good info.

I am, however somewhat confused as to how a qualifying round of 73 1/2, which I assume are subject to the same rules as the finals, does not qualify as a better record than 70 in same said finals. Completely illogical (,Captain).

The qualifying round was a local contest and not the championship contest. I don't understand the logic of the IFOCE, either, to not consider the 73 1/2 dogs as a world record.
