The cop's training kicked in. He wasnt even thinking when he did that, it was all automatic.

Justified shooting unfortunately for the dog

The dog charged at the officer. For what purpose, it's not clear from the video, but I doubt it was to lick his face because he was happy to see him.
A pitbull can fatally injure a human, so if the officer felt he was being attacked, he had no choice but to fire to protect himself.

This is tragic, but the real blame lies on the owner who did not control his dog.

Kinda hard when you're lying on the pavement with a seizure

I think the owner is the guy who is unconcious or dead on the ground (guy didn't even twitch when the gun went off a couple of feet from his head). Dog fearlessly tried to protect his non-responsive owner, too bad he couldn't understand that the police were trying to help.

Additional info:
- owner (homeless, with a history or alcohol and drug abuse) was having a seizure
- no way the police could have known but apparently the dog had a history of biting, being overprotective of the owner
- the dog was hit in the head but survived the shooting and is in critical care

It's a hard call, the paradmedics can't help the patient because of the damn dog. Paramedics call the cops because animal control people can't respond in time. Cops arrive, to assess the situation, and did what they needed to do. Paramedics help the patient and it's all good. People scream and yell, because they are too stupid to know any better. I would like to hear the crowd screaming when the damn dog starts to tear the crowd appart. Pitbulls are dangerous animals, and if the patient did not receive medical treatment on time, It's because of the owner's stupid decision to buy a dog that everyone fears for a reason.

I think some have pets to get sympathy when they panhandle. A young guy came up to my car in a grocery store parking lot with a dog and asked for money. He said that they were hungry. ( I saw him fiddling with his Ipad a few minutes previous ) I offered to let him have some cans of pet food that I already had in my grocery bag, but he refused.

I've never understood this either but you see it all the time. The homeless guy on the sidewalk with his dog. I get that the dog is good company and protection for him, but if you can't afford to feed yourself, how can you afford to feed and care for an animal??
Even homeless people need companionship. A dog is a very loyal companion. Many homeless people will feed their pets before themselves and it's unfortunate that he choose a pit bull.

The police have to make real time life and death decisions in split seconds. We have the luxery(sp) of studying the video frame by frame numerous times. I think there is an inquiry now in Toronto about mentally ill people attacking police and getting shot. If someone attacks you with a knife, do you ask him if he is mentally ill? If yes, do you allow him to stab you?

Was he having a seizure? It's not clear from the video - he looked like he was just passed out.
I see no evidence, either, that the dog was properly restrained while the owner was conscious (ie. no leash attached).. so I still - based on what I see - have to place the ultimate blame on him.

The dog should have been muzzled, or at the very least on a leash. The person responsible for his death is the owner.

maybe your assumption that they can't "afford" to feed themselves need examination.

If you think about it, a panhandler could potentially make a lot more money than the average joe that works either in construction or office. The difference is pride. The kid's hunger is drugs or alcohol. If you were hungry, who cares where the food comes from. real hungry people eat anything. if the kid refused the pet food, he obviously needs cash for something else.
