You've all been had by Susan Boyle and Simon Cowell

If you don't think the whole thing was manufactured, you're a fool.

How many of you know that Simon makes his real cash off the record deals he cuts from BGT and American Idol? He makes $10M a year for hosting and zillions more from record sales and promotional items.

And you don't think they knew Susan Boyle would strike a nerve and Simon's shocked face wasn't put on?

Please drive through. You've been had. Remember Paul Potts, the last ugly sensation on Britain's Got Talent? A cell phone salesman who dreamed of being an opera singer? Well, he'd already sang professionally but that didn't quite make it on to the show. Bad for storytelling.

(BTW, now there's talk of a duet of Boyle and Potts. The Two Uglies! Whoot)

This story did make me laugh though:

"Besides, after 47 years of virginity, I'm sure Susan is also anxious to get something cracking as soon as possible.

It is the very definition of "staged" in every way possible.
But you cant stage the audience's response.
(or at least it didnt look staged to me)

Sure, people will make money off her. She will make money as well.

Staged, don't think so.

Impact on people that are anaesthetized by the "beautiful people" cult of modern society....priceless. Occasionally it is worth remembering that people, regardless of their appearance, are capable of amazing things. Enjoy a beautiful voice and hope that she can sustain it into a happy career outside of her little village and cats.

I was moved by watching her...and wish her well.

i agree about this Susan Boyle is planned and frankly I am actually starting to wonder whether American Idol is completely scripted as well.

What do you consider professional? Does she have albums out? Is she in Broadway? Does she sing commercial jingles?

I played guitar in many bar bands for years and made two CD's (which never sold), but I would certainly not call myself professional.

There must be some sort of rehersal before the contestants hit the stage. If Suzane Boyle sang like she did during the rehersals, I am sure the word would have gotten back to Simon.
Then there is the case of William Hung, thats the guy that sang so badly that it was funny. The show uses these bad acts to draw an audience. There are bad acts that are so pitifull that it is sad and cruel to put them on stage. William Hung was used as a fool, but the last I heard he was getting calls to open shopping malls and singing at doing barmitvas for rich people. He was reportedly getting $30,000 plus expenses for the private appearances and $150,000 a day for the mall openings.

You can't base a reality TV show on what "might" happen during the show, it would wind up very boring. If you watch the Susan Boyle clip you will see that she went on last, emphasising the drama of the moment. I am sure that Simon knew she was good Piers and the broad are such good showpeople that they know how to react, or actually over react for the drama.(There were tryouts for the tryout and Simon and the others probably saw the tape.) Now if you see the new youtube of the 13 year old kid. Simon stops him mid-song and asks if he knows any other songs. The kid knows one of Michael Jackson's songs, and miracle of miracle they have the music for it instantaneously. Scripted? Right down to the last second.
If you watch the Biggest Loser you will note that the weigh off is done in an order that creates drama right down to the last person. How could this be done if the people hadn't been weighed right before the actual weigh off?
And in Survivor have you noticed that the voting always creates some suspense. I am sure the producers rearrange the ballots to create that suspense.
And on Celebrity Apprentice Trump fires people not because they screw something up. He fires them because they are boring. The ones left on the show didn't necessarily do the best job, but their personalities are so abrasive that they will guarantee interest in future shows.
Nothing wrong with this, the producers are trying to make a good show. Believing the reality shows are not scripted is like believing an SP is in love with you - not very realistic at all.

All reality TV is staged, it was basically created as a union busting method to fuck over writers who make a fraction of the money and get no residuals for the same work.

Typically with any show/interview the cutaway shots are filmed after the fact (you want your camera's on the main action) so they were specifically scripted.

Doesn't change how great her voice is is and how strange it is hearing that out of someone with body language like that.

It is only in pop music, that great singers are pretty. Joan Sutherland and Birgit Nielsson were no beauties.

Potts was never a professional.

He sang in some amateur productions, but was never paid. He had studied the craft however. It's not like one can get out of bed and say, "oh, I think I'm going to sing some opera today" That's for the kareokee crowd.

Regardless of what people think of him, Simon is a marketing genius, he knows how to make money better than anyone.

The analogy I draw is to the former WWF and the marketing skills of Vince McMahon.

Some friends would debate with me whether "wrestling" was fake. My argument at the time (think Wrestlemania III) was that the characters were developed and the outcome was predetermined, but that the majority of the actions were real. Since then, more and more has been scripted to "ensure" better entertainment.

I would suggest that the producers certainly knew Ms. Boyle's capabilities, and that her first audition probably went well, too. That doesn't mean that Simon knew quite what to expect from her on stage, but yes, the outcome was planned.
