Ok, so I'm a couple weeks early with a Halloween thread, but I recently stumbled across a video game which was given to me, a few years back, to try out, but never did, mainly because I didn't have the hardware horsepower capable of playing it. Well, I do now and after rediscovering it, I decided to install it and give it a try.

The video game is DOOM 3. Quickly, "Doom 3 is set in 2145 on Mars, where a military-industrial conglomerate has set up a scientific research facility to develop fields such as teleportation, biological research and advanced weapons design. However, the teleportation experiments inadvertently open a gateway to Hell, resulting in a catastrophic invasion by demons."

Although, the game was originally released August, 2004, even after 5 years it still ranks as one of the most terrifying games ever. The proper hardware is now available to play it as it was intended - basically to scare the fuck out of you. It is rated Mature 17+, Blood, Gore and Intense Violence (see bottom right corner of photo). Personally, I would have rated it even stronger, as there is some serious psychological mind fucking going on in the game. There are 4 ways to play the game;
  1. Recruit - basic novice level, fairly easy, not too intense visually. The creatures are dumb, and sorta freeze when a light is flashed in their eyes, kind of like a stunned deer.
  2. Marine - default mode - appropriate for the rating.
  3. Veteran - more advanced with all the effects turned on - creatures have good AI, no filters - blood, gore and violence.
  4. NIGHTMARE - this is locked by default - it requires special console codes and modifying the config files to activate - BUT Holy fuck is this mode scary shit!!

In Nightmare mode, every special effect is unleashed to scare the fuck out of you. The sounds, screams, lighting, and effects are downright horrorfying, sending chills down your spin and putting every sense on edge with every step you take in the DOOM world. After blasting the creatures their bodies continue to quiver as corps begin to pile up and scatter the rooms, with realistic bullet wounds and internal organs splatter and blood splash effects. This is some fucking scary shit, even at my age. Who the fuck thinks-up this shit?

To experience the full effect of this game, a closed dimly lit room with a good sound system or headphones are a must. Look up the cheats to activate the Nightmare mode, and I guarantee you'll have a few sleepless nights. Walking down demonic hallways, with dead corps hanging from the ceiling, as strange inscriptions are smeared with blood on the walls, people scream in the background as they are being tortured by hellish beings is enough to make you run up the stairs real fast at night before going to bed. A masterpiece of horrific levels which you physically and mentally meld with. Fucking scary shit, and perfect to get you into the Halloween fright-night mood.

But whats amazing is the technology wrapped around this game. The lighting and shadow visuals, and directional sound effects - you can actually direct your movements based on the direction the sounds are coming from, and the AI in the creatures, they know where you are and hunt you down.

It's a fucking scary game, and there are a few times I stopped playing simply because it freaked the bejeezus out of me, but I keep going back to finish the next level. I gotta see the ending!!

A few hints if you plan on getting through the levels.

Get the cheat codes (god, give all, give ammo, give PDA, etc.)
Get the flashlight mounted gun mods, it beats the hell out of switching between flashlight and your main weapon.
There are a couple of other mods that will increase the scare sound factor, but to be honest the default is way more than most can handle.

There are a few youtube posts, of people playing the game in the dark, and you can watch them shit their pants as they play through the levels.

Some videos to see what I'm talking about.

Seriously, a great game and perfect for the Halloween time frame.

Enjoy!!!

the hobby needs more capitalism
I agree. Doom 3 is a great game if you want to be scared shitless.

I recommend not using the flashlight mod as alternating between the flashlight and gun allows for your mind to wander, further escalating the suspense.

Heaven, definately Heaven
I still have Doom and Doom II. I too waited for Moore's Law to kick in with the hardware. Game rocks, Boss was tough. Bloomberg Television is still playing Space Invaders, I hear.

I gotta admit the flashlight gun mod I have, increased the shotgun to military grade level, and it packs one hell of a womp compared to the default shotgun.

Same goes for most of the other weapons, they all pretty much got a big boost in power. It just makes you feel a little more bold walking into a scary room.:D

Doom is more shock and things popping out of no where. Sure it frightens you for a sec, but after a while you become numb to them or you see them coming. I'm more scared of suspense building games like Fatal Frame. Watched a friend play it and I was shitting myself. Imagine an asian horror movie but your playing it and that makes it like 10x worst. Alas, Ive been looking for fatal frame 2 for so long and have yet to find a copy to play it in its entirety.

Then again, the part where you hear the girl crying in DOOM 3 was pretty damm nerve racking.

IIRC, Doom 3 was too difficult, though that's more realistic.

And at the time, the average computer was not sufficient to play it.

Quake 2, as unrealistic as it was, had excellent frame rate on even modest systems.

IMO, it was funner having more enemies, more weapons, etc.

Didn't they stop make Doom and replaced it with Quake?
After Doom 2, which was very similar to Doom 1, the Quake series came out.

It was quite awhile before they finally came out with Doom 3 to take advantage of newer graphics technology. Doom 3 was meant to be a more realistic, cinematic overhaul of what Doom 1 should have been.

However, I gotta say, in terms of fun, I had better times with Doom 1/2 and Quake.

Doom 3, imo, came out too late. By that time, PC games were on the decline.

Agree.

Other games I would recommend :

Condemned Criminal Origins ( and its sequel but I haven't played it )
F.E.A.R
Siren
Silent Hill 2 or 3
Clive Barcher's Undying
Thief Deadly Shadows
Call of Cthulu Dark Corners of Earth

Its all about atmosphere and the way the game builds up the tension and the eventual 'poo in your pants' moment :D

Oh and having a shiny new pc with some juicy hardware is a great feeling eh

Access the pulldown terminal window to input commands directly into the game engine (PC=alt-cntrl-~, Mac cntrl-option-~) and type;

god = full armour and no death
give all = gives all weapons, amour, health, and ammo
give ammo = replenish full stock of ammo for all weapons

Now all you need to do is explore the levels and find the exit to the next one until you reach Hell!!

I've read some reviews about F.E.A.R, but have never seen it in action. This might be a serious contender to check out.

I got to admit, with todays hefty ratings in notebook configurations, playing some of these games is totally doable.

Gonna do some research on F.E.A.R.

UPDATE: Made it to Hell!!!

Holy crap this is intense!!

Gonna try and see if I can record a snippet of the game play and share it... so you can see what I'm talking about.

The DOOM/Quake engines allow for recording to AVI files and sharing. Kool eh!!

Wasn't it great when you had to go against 2 Hell Knights?

Wait till you play the expansion. Resurrection Of Evil.
