TORONTO — Protesting students forced road closures and brought traffic to a crawl as they marched in downtown Toronto during a "Day of Action" held in 13 Ontario cities to demand an end to poverty in the province.

The students gathered at the University of Toronto and wound their way to the Ontario legislature on Thursday afternoon. In Ottawa, students marched to the Human Rights Monument.

The Canadian Federation of Students is calling on Premier Dalton McGuinty to invest more in social services and equity measures.

The federation says record-high student unemployment coupled with record-high tuition fees have placed students in a particularly precarious position.

Students are also calling for Employment Insurance and social assistance reform, a livable minimum wage, good jobs for all and reduced tuition.

Rallies were also scheduled in Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Mississauga, Guelph, London, Sault Ste. Marie, Peterborough, Scarborough, St. Catherines, Kingston and Windsor.

Students showing some social responsibilty is an interesting concept. It would be interesting to see he reaction from the students if the govt decided to use some of the education funding for social programs and raised tuition to compensate.

The only way to end poverty is to make being "poor" a capitol offense..... or cut off all aid except temporary aid to productive people or long term aid to previously productive people...

Most people, not All, but MOST are poor because that's the best they're capable of... It is. their lot. in life. Period. Sure, a lot of people could enjoy an improved living situation so long as 2 factors are met: Ability & Motivation...

Some simply do Not have the ability... they are either physically unsuitable, or metally deficient... No amount of motivation can help the incapable & so no amount of money should be wasted...

most "poor" have nothing really wrong with them in a physical or mental sense... they could support themselves doing Something... but for some reason the motivation just isn't there... No matter how able a person is, without motivation that potential is Wasted By the induvidual.... So no amount of money should be wasted on them....

Especially in this case because I suspect that the main reason why this category has no motivation is that they know that we will support their asses...

A lot of the people on the streets are simply too lazy, or more likely, too damaged to do any better... throwing money at them does little good as all you're doing is basically life support...

Which is a fine choice in some cases... some people can truly benefit from a little help to get them past a tough time. In medicine the procedure in the cases where the body needs temporary support to heal & recover... if there is no chance of recovery.. most humane doctors will recommend pulling the plug....

maybe if they protest long and hard enough.... (as much as they should be studying) the weather might get cooler....

While they are at it, protest the weather too... maybe, just maybe it'll improve because of the protest....
Sounds like you don't like young people having any concience or
care for the less advantaged in society.

Exactly, or imposed huge taxes on beer and pizza.

It is always amazing how those who doen't have to pay much in tax, want to dramaticly increase government spending.

yep, you got it. And if anybody, who is well off, argues for higher taxes, he is deemed hypochritical.

So tell me, who is allowed to argue for higher taxes?

Protesting does NOTHING, ACTION does something, so instead of wasting energy PROTESTING, they should be helping those who are not as fiscally stable as the rest of us.

Single mothers need help, so why dont some of those students offer to help her out with babysitting and day care so they can work at a better paying job? Or why dont they use their energy to collect necessities for these families living in poverty?

Someone has too much time on their hands if all they can do is PROTEST. It's not about not liking young people or not caring about those with fewer advantages. In fact, many a time I go out of my way to help those that need help the most.
I do not agree with you on this. Your argument could easily be expanded to
any political activity.

There is a huge difference between personally helping single mothers, and
to attempt to change society to be more supportive of single mothers.

Your argument, if taken to its logical end point, would mean that nobody should
take on in any political activity.

Bullcrap!

Find some volunteer opportunities (habitat for humanity or working at the local food bank come readily to mind, but there are hundreds of possibilities) where you might actually make a difference vs. blocking traffic and playing jr. blowhard for a day!
