Clueless

I’m with Simon Johnson here: how is it possible, at this late date, for Obama to be this clueless?

The lead story on Bloomberg right now contains excerpts from an interview with Business Week which tells us:

President Barack Obama said he doesn’t “begrudge” the $17 million bonus awarded to JPMorgan Chase & Co. Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon or the $9 million issued to Goldman Sachs Group Inc. CEO Lloyd Blankfein, noting that some athletes take home more pay.

The president, speaking in an interview, said in response to a question that while $17 million is “an extraordinary amount of money” for Main Street, “there are some baseball players who are making more than that and don’t get to the World Series either, so I’m shocked by that as well.”

“I know both those guys; they are very savvy businessmen,” Obama said in the interview yesterday in the Oval Office with Bloomberg BusinessWeek, which will appear on newsstands Friday. “I, like most of the American people, don’t begrudge people success or wealth. That is part of the free- market system.”

Obama sought to combat perceptions that his administration is anti-business and trumpeted the influence corporate leaders have had on his economic policies. He plans to reiterate that message when he speaks to the Business Roundtable, which represents the heads of many of the biggest U.S. companies, on Feb. 24 in Washington.
Oh. My. God.

First of all, to my knowledge, irresponsible behavior by baseball players hasn’t brought the world economy to the brink of collapse and cost millions of innocent Americans their jobs and/or houses.

And more specifically, not only has the financial industry has been bailed out with taxpayer commitments; it continues to rely on a taxpayer backstop for its stability. Don’t take it from me, take it from the rating agencies:

The planned overhaul of US financial rules prompted Standard & Poor’s to warn on Tuesday it might downgrade the credit ratings of Citigroup and Bank of America on concerns that the shake-up would make it less likely that the banks would be bailed out by US taxpayers if they ran into trouble again.
The point is that these bank executives are not free agents who are earning big bucks in fair competition; they run companies that are essentially wards of the state. There’s good reason to feel outraged at the growing appearance that we’re running a system of lemon socialism, in which losses are public but gains are private. And at the very least, you would think that Obama would understand the importance of acknowledging public anger over what’s happening.

But no. If the Bloomberg story is to be believed, Obama thinks his key to electoral success is to trumpet “the influence corporate leaders have had on his economic policies.”

We’re doomed.

Hold on here. As Krugman notes, it's Obama who's 'shilling' for the banks. I didn't see OTB mentioned anywhere in the blog.

When Obama makes a statement in support of free markets and capitalism he is clueless. When GOP type make more radical statement they are the protectors of liberty and American values. How did Obama go from a socialist to a clueless capitalist with one sentence.

No one in this thread is saying Obama is a socialist....yet, but rather, with his statements in support of American bankers, that he appears to be clueless. Hey, let's stay on target here.

I was not referring specifically to anyone on this thread although i am fairly confident that if I were go back through previous threads certain authors have. In any event that is the GOP party line.

No idea of what Obama is smoking nowadays.

Wait a minute, he said he quit smoking Marlboro since he became the 44th but given the confusion on priorities, I dunno know.

Maybe he's smoking bong or something....

As far as Paul Krugman is concern, like all famous economists they all have their pet theories and discredit anything that don't work out his way, Paul is no different.

What is different though is if I could recall, similar to Nouriel Roubini, who is single, Paul Krugman is married and a DINK. Unlike other famous economists, neither of them have much stakes to prove the viability of their pet theories since they do not have kids, let alone grand kids to bear the consequences, if Obama adapts their policies and it turns out to be dead wrong.

Maybe I am mean and harsh but sometimes you have to wonder what's the hidden agenda behind these doom and gloom preachers.

I hope that 'K' doesn't now stand for Krugman!

I think there's no denying that Obama is a major disappointment. To me, whether on the war in Afghanistan or on the financial crisis he's 'Bush Light'.

Krugman has been souring on Obama over the past few months. It started with his(Krugman's) theory that the stimulus was insufficient and that Obama lacked the willpower to increase it. Then he was PO'd over the attempt by Obama to 'reason' with Republicans who only wanted to sabatoge his efforts. Now, because Obama is being seen as 'anti business' by Wall street(and CNBC and FOX) because of his trshing of the bank bonuses, he is trying to mollify wall street. Krugman is right. Again.

A full 78 percent of "Republican leaders" believe that President Obama is a socialist, according to a new poll conducted by Esquire magazine.
Amazing how effective the GOP Dumbing Down Campaign has been....

Its the magazine which conducted the poll which shows how stupid 78% of the GOP leaders are. :)
Actually most of that poll makes sense.... it's not very scientific saying that we interviewed 75 top guys but we can't tell you who they are..... I think many people confuse Obama's pandering to the left with corporate bashing with socialism.... he's trying to have it both ways....
