Well it seems that we have adopted the US Gas pump method here in Canada.
I used to like the old method.
Stick you CC-credit card in/out ; choose your gas grade, wait for beep, and off you went to put the AMOUNT you want. Once done receipt comes out and Then off you went.

Now it is a whole new game and I despise it.

Stick card in, and it is locked.
Choose Amount starting from 20.00 that is robbery, because I usually put $5 when it is high then wait for it to drop
If not happy choose another amount that must be rounded up to a nearest dollar.
then enter pin number
Would you like a wash with that?
Do you want receipt?
Take card
choose grade.
Wait for freaking Beep.
start fill up............ here is the kicker which I didn't like about US.
you set to 20.00 gas at 19 the pump start to g...o r..e..a..l...ll..y s...l...o...wwwww.

really slow.

Stupid new system really sucks, it must have been an american who is now CEO in Canada in one of the petro companies who brought this stupid idea with him.
Why is this stupid, because it is freaking cold outside and I don't want to be standing around in the freaking cold, Punching in numbers. If you never felt Edmonton winter cold don't comment.

I am searching for a pump company that doesn't have this system at all.

That felt good.

I also am in GTA and have never seen a pump that acts like you describe as US method (actually the pumps in NY state did not do this on my last trip either...)
Which station does this?

This system is in place to prevent Fraud. You select an amount and the system pre-authorizes against your credit card. This means that you can't pump over your credit card limit and fail to pay.

If you end up using less than you selected you only get charged for what you actually use.

It's not a big deal.

Thats why in the middle east they have people fill the gas for you while you smoke your cigars away in your air conditioned cars

North of GTA
One reason why I appreciate living outside of the GTA. Three gas stations in my town, one is Petro-Canada and the other two are full-service. The owner of one of the full-service stations checks Petro-Can's price before he opens and sets his price at one cent below. During my trips to the GTA iti s refreshing to see that full service up north is still a bit cheaper than self-serv in Toronto. And none of this checking your bank account bullshit. If you are a little bit short after filling... "No problem, just pay me the difference next time you fill up." Try getting that kind of service in Toronto these days.

Well you are not going to like this.
California, Texas, and it depends on the states/pumps when driving from Buffalo to Miami.
Here is something I learn a few months ago.

In the US the listed price is what you pay when you pay cash. If you pay with DC/CC you get charged more for service charge. I believe it is a % of the total dollar.

The pumps I am talking about are next to Hamilton city, so far. It may be coming to a pump near you.

when it gets really cold out and if i pay by interac i enter the dollar amount with an extra dollar added(i.e. if I want to put in $20 I enter $21)then I don't have to fill up with the slower pump on the last dollar. I also use Esso's speedpass which is extremely fast at the pump

Who only puts $5 of gas in their cars these days? My lawn mower takes more than that. Do you have a scooter?

I put in $5 gas and by the time I get home, the gas guage is back to where I was before I pumped gas, lol. Don't get much these days for $5, used to, now I usually put $20 when gas is high and then fill up when it's low.

I certainly have, and you will too eventually, I'm sure. The US ones I really have trouble with want your zipcode as well before they'll pump, and of course they choke on our Postal Codes. So far, choosing Pay Inside, then handing over a credit card has always worked.

I agree, the US pumps are now not Canadian friendly, the gas companies forgot that Canadians travel throughout the US extensively and are now inconvenienced. Snowbirds and families who drive to Florida now have to go inside first and pay iinstead of just a quick swipe at the pumps, gas up and go.

Another difference between US and CDN pumps that I don't understand, and don't like . . . in the US the gas pumps still have the small levers on the handles to hold the pump in the on position (like we used to have here for full service stations.) In Canada, we have to hold the pump handle until the tank is full. Why can't we have the old style and let us do things like keep our hands warm in our pockets, or go to buy a coffee or wash the windshield etc while the gas is being automatically pumped? Doesn't the auto shut off work any more?

Exactly. I just put $100 but rarely spend even half that amount. But I don't have to deal with the pump slowing down.

I don't get it. This has been in place for years...

We do the same to Americans though. It's somewhat understandable considering cross-border preauthorization procedures, but not good for helping tourism.

My big bitch is how it seems to take 30 seconds before the damn thing starts pumping once it's told you to start.

One beep?

More like 5 and a series of flashes of the screen and having to select the gas grade twice.

Just turn the fucking thing on.

I noticed the new system in some of the Shell stations -- which I don't mind.

With gas prices so high, I keep to $15-20, which, believe it or not, lasts longer than filling the tank.
(since your car is carrying extra weight from the gasoline)

And, it's my little protest F U to the oil conglomerates.

I do this as well. No way I want to pay a gas company so I can store their stuff.

If we all did this, it would really be a slap upside the head to those gas companies. But that's not going to happen. People who like their tanks filled will fill their tanks. People like me who only put $15-20 in are going to keep doing that.

That may be true, but try getting a hot SP to fuck you and get great GFE or PSE service up north. Not so bad in the GTA anymore, eh?
