The American Empire also ran/runs an oppresive regime of slavery, subjugation, and oppression.
LOL, the American one is just a derivative from the British one, albeit crude by comparison.

BTW, let's see whether Obama, a known anti-British POTUS would dismantle the American Empire for the sake of it.

Sorry to hear that but again I am not Irish.

That being said, how come a big chunk of the Republic of Ireland economy owe tonnes of money to the British banks? Don't the Irish want nothing to do with anything related to Britain, including the language??
Likely because so much of their land and wealth was stolen by the Brits

your forget that the british empire ran an opressive colonial regime of slavery, subjugation, opression etc? aks the irish and the former colonies
You are also forgetting, or perhaps unaware, than when it came to the abolitionism of slavery ( sadly a slow process for every country that practiced it) UK was the first and most active in eliminating it.

Well good luck to get rid of English as one of the official languages and stop driving on the "wrong" side of the road like the Brits. ;)

Not sure whether UK was the first and most active but if my memory serves me right, it was the French who were "the first" after they got boot out from Haiti.

Regrettably, we know the rest of their history in Haiti since the abolition. :frown:

I suggest the older countries which are mostly European. What kind of history can young countries like Canada, USA or Mexico have ? What kind of voting list is this ?

Greece, England, France, Spain and Italy by far. Most of our studies in University and College have historical and educational references to these 5 countries mentioned. North America was made from them all and very proud.

Oh Yeah, you cannot change history either. Many people try but it'll never happen.

Japan, China don't have much of a history other than hiroshima, communism and Germany isn't bragging their World Wars either.

The British Emprire was the greatest empire the world has ever seen. It doesn't take a genius to look down at the list of the countries that they founded and come to that conclusion.

Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, right on down the list. The institutions that they put in place - the type of government, the legal systems remain to this very day.

Clearly Britain is the greatest nation ever.

But I voted for Canada because I'm Canadian and Canada is the best country in the world today in which to live. People will often say that "we are lucky to live in Canada" and I will correct them to say that Luck has nothing to do with it, but yes, we as individuals are fortunate to live in the greatest place on earth (other than the winter weather which does suck I admit.)
I disagree.
Britain's history has been painted by self serving Brits.
The British have committed some very reprehensible acts in the name of the empire.

The left India in a horrible mess after raping it of its wealth
Most of the other colonies were based upon second class native peoples being subjugated into pseudo-slavery by their British over-lords

Here is good example of how great Britain was
In 1700s North America, the Hurons were allied to the French, while the Iroquois were allied to the British.
The British would send gifts of little tin boxes to Huron villages as a peace offering, with explicit instructions not to open these boxes until they were within the Huron Village
Inside these little gifts were small pieces of cut up blankets, infected with small pox.
A few weeks later the British would invade that Huron Village to finish off any survivors.

yes Britain was great, if you are talking to a Brit

I feel honoured to post on this thread, given the elevated intellects of so many of my fellow TERB-ites.

Enjoy this one, friends. I am not worthy to join you.

How can you not put Afghanistan on the list? It is the only country that defied two of the world's super powers, Soviet, and now USA.

Try to tell the same thing to the Mandarin speaking Chinese. They still could not let go.

That being said, it's an irony when they want to be priggish in front of the camera, but then many of them would spend a fortune to send their kids to study in Britain and launder their money in London High Street luxury stores/real estates.
Conquering Britain by stealth, it seems.

We Westerners don't know much about the histories of Eastern countries, or African ones.
