.... Here we go again

Daniel Dale
Urban Affairs Reporter

On Wednesday night, Mayor Rob Ford went on television to accuse award-winning Star reporter Daniel Dale of trespassing on his property and videotaping his backyard. This is Dale’s own account of the encounter.

Usually, it is the media chasing Mayor Rob Ford. I never expected Mayor Ford to chase me. Nor to fear for my safety in his presence.

I’ve been a City Hall reporter since a week after the mayor took office in December of 2010. On Wednesday afternoon, I learned that he had asked the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority to buy a parcel of little-used TRCA land adjacent to his house. In a letter to the TRCA’s executive committee, he said he wanted the land so that he could erect a “better” fence to prevent young people from trespassing on his property and to protect his children.

In his letter, Ford said the land was a “vacant” parcel; a TRCA official told me it was actually a sliver of city-operated parkland that had mature trees. I decided that I needed to visit the property to see what it actually looked like. I also wanted to see if Ford’s home already had a fence. And I wanted to see where the land was actually located; the TRCA’s map was confusing.

DALE’S STORY ON THE TRCA LAND PROPOSAL

I arrived sometime after 7:30 p.m. I walked around the parkland toward the mayor’s property. I took note of the trees, then, standing perhaps 10 metres from his wooden backyard fence, emailed an additional two sentences to my editor at 7:47. My phone died as I tried to snap photos of the trees and the fencing. I’m still not sure if the parcel I was standing on is the parcel Ford is looking to acquire, but I can say this with certainty: I never came close to entering his backyard.

Moments after my phone died, the mayor appeared, wearing a white campaign t-shirt, at the sole entrance and exit to the parcel of property; he had walked around from the front of his house. He appeared extremely agitated.

“Hey buddy,” he yelled. “What are you doing? Are you spying on me? Are you spying on me? Are you spying on me?”

I shouted, astonished, that I was not – that I was writing about his attempt to buy TRCA land. He began to approach me at a brisk walk, asking again, at an escalating volume, if I was spying. I continued to plead that I was writing about the land.

At some point, perhaps 10 or 15 seconds into the encounter, he cocked his fist near his head and began charging at me at a full run. I began pleading with him, as loud as I could, with my hands up, for him to stop. I yelled, at the top of my lungs, something like, “Mayor Ford, I’m writing about the land! I’m just looking at the land! You’re trying to buy the TRCA land!” Instinctually, I also reached into my pocket to grab my dead phone. I then fiddled with my voice recorder, trying fruitlessly to turn it on so that I would have a recording of any physical violence.

At some point, perhaps two metres away from me, the mayor did stop moving toward me, but his face remained menacing, and he continued to cock his fist and shake it. “Drop your phone!” he demanded, shouting louder than I have ever heard him. “Drop your phone! Drop your phone now!”

Every time I tried to sidestep him to escape, he moved with me and yelled at me again to drop my phone. I became more frightened than I can remember; after two or three attempts to dart away, I threw my phone and my recorder down on the grass, yelled that he could take them, and ran.

When I reached the park’s parking lot, a fair distance away, I approached two young men who were sitting in a car, asking them to use their phone. The mayor, looking in our direction, continued to shout, and I ran to my car and drove away.

The Star is now acting like the paparazzi, doing "investigations" at night. Another attempt to slander Ford. The Star has a major hard on for Ford, bordering on obsession.

Here's the thing: No-one has a hard time believing that was exactly what happened. The Mayor is a trailer trash.

"Drop your phone now." WTF?

It wasn't "drop your gun/knife/baseball bat". Since when is a phone in hand a dangerous and intimidating weapon to a large 310lb man?

Quite frankly, by being a bellicose & belligerent ass, Ford invites this type of crap onto himself, right or wrong. No one ever did this to Miller, Lastman, Hall or Eggleton in all of these years despite all of their own enemies.

The mayor has no credibility. And this big reveal that he is trying to buy parkland! you try that. see how far you get. He's a power abuser. I'm surprised at every nutty incident we hear about him that he doesn't have a heart attack. I wonder what the police will make up.

I guess you do have to be brave to stand your ground when being charged by an angry 300 pound man, even on public land. However, any local idiot should be aware that, although official time for the sun dropping below the horizon that day was 8:21PM, it's quite light in Toronto until about 9PM. Well after the incident. And we all know news only happens, and only gets 'checked out' between 9 and 5.

Thanks for setting things straight ray.

Working on a deadline... Like a good journalist he wanted to see what he was writing about. His phone died right after he sent in a two line addition / modification to his story.

I have no problem believing Dale's story and don't have a problem with him taking pictures of the property he was writing about. He was not on Ford's property and Ford's property is fenced with no back entrance.

He's an award-winning journalist and a familiar face to Ford.

Doug and Robbie were drama queening it to the fullest last night on CP24 - hyperbole at it's finest. And sadly, those who cling to sound bites will side with the the mayor.

He should have stood his ground, maybe that trailer trash mayor would have assaulted him. Then he could be forced from office solving Toronto's biggest problem.

Just listened to a radio interview with the elderly neighbour who reported it to Ford. His story is significantly different and he claims that the reporter was in fact standing on piled up cynder blocks peering into the mayor's backyard and house with his phone to his face. He said he gardens daily and the blocks were not there or piled up before. I'll take this guys word. The Star is clearly full of shit.

why don't you take into consideration the fact ford gets death threats all the time, has had ppl break into his home, gets filmed going to KFC etc. hes constantly harassed by the media, david miller never got treated this way. It was 8pm at night, for all rob knew it was some guy ready to throw molotov cocktails at his house. He didnt know who it was until he went up to him. This reporter is on camera taking pictures of fords backyard, he's a piece of shit and a liar. he panicked when ford confronted him, and was obviously yelling for help to over sensationalize the situation, to shift some of the focus off him and onto ford. the piece of property ford was buying was far away from where this reporter was, its a bs excuse. have you ever dealt with news reporters? they are on the same level as lawyers and used car salesman. as usual I see all the lefties here defending the reporter, this has nothing to do with left or right, why can't ppl just admit the reporter was wrong even if you dislike ford and his politics

Link with video or GTFO.

Between menopausal women dressed as Xena in front of his house on public property, and ebil award winning reporters on public property behind his house (who filed an actual story unrelated to the Ford induced drama) the mayor's life must be a living hell... It clearly justifies calling the police and having loud angry concentrations... The hardened nub of Ford supporters will pretty much justify anything... On the bright side, he's not likely to get more than 12 votes on anything that's not a labour negotiation or a complete bipartisan no-brainer.

Oh, and as far as the 'media following him to KFC' person goes. Detached from reality much? Was it crass to run the story that was videotaped by a person on the street (who was not a member of the media)? Yes. But it's also crass to leverage your diet as a friendly media event week after week. It goes to character that you'd hype a diet to that degree, and use it as a media love in, then fail at it so spectacularly... Think of it this way, if Obama had a weekly presser to friendly media on his quitting smoking, then got caught smoking, would it be fair game? Yes. Which is why the Obama line has always been, 'It's been hard' and he isn't prone to bringing it up unless asked. I'd suggest that it not the K-F-C but the hyp-oc-risy.

lol why do you think the cinder blocks were there? besides ford, do you really think his elderly neighbours are in on this lie too? sp24 arrived at fords house very quickly, and interviewed the fords and the neighbours on the spot. cp24 was taken to the spot where dale was. stop being a douche and think logically. The guy is on film there is a camera pointing at the same spot, right where those cinderblocks are. the police are reviewing the tape and im sure more details will come out. btw, you can eat kfc and still lose weight

Geeez, it was truly entrapment. The blocks were left there so that anyone wanting to take pictures woulf use them to peer over the fence right in the video camera field of view, or not.

Finally heard the report on the tele. The reporter is lying through his teeth. His explanation of doing a story about a security fence is crap. The fence is to be installed at the side, not the back. It could be more easily seen during the day from the street and the reporter ran leaving his gear behind when approached by Ford. He just din 't want Ford to realize it was 'him'.

He was sneaking around at night in the back of peoples yards trying to get candid shots of the mayor, nothing more. The STAR is standing behind the reporter, too bad.

Nothing clear about it at all, at least not in your account of one radio interview. I think the phrase you were after was, 'The Star is arguably full of shit.'

If the cinder-blocks were not on Ford's property, then the reporter was not on Ford's property, and there was no trespassing as Rob is alleging. Not even Rob has said the block or blocks were Rob's and on his property. I have no idea what laws restrict people from looking at someone else's property from a park, but it happens to all of us who live next to public space—like a sidewalk—and to anyone who has neighbours.

It's quite clear Ford is a ham-handed amateur at asserting his own rights and desires for privacy and if he had the brains we'd want in a Mayor, he'd have professionals do it to save him and all of us the embarrassment. With his record, it's obvious he needs a Minder. Maybe then he could start being a Mayor.

Meantime: If you're being voyeured, call the cops.

... come on maaan

The reporter in question is well-known to Ford - He didn't feel that he was in danger lol.

He was taking pictures of the piece of city-owned land behind Ford's house - not his backyard.... Ford's backyard is fenced in.

Douggie called into cp24 last night and even accused an award winning reporter with a solid reputation of trying to climb over the fence. lol come'on now.

Ya the Star has a hard-on for the mayor but for good reason.

It's not just trespass, but can also be stalking based on watch and beset guidelines. The general public is not allowed to sit outside someone's residence and watch, especially private activity in the residence. The lawyers on here can give you the fine points. If you do this you do it at the peril of the law. It might be easy to explain parking at the curbside and watching, but tougher to explain being behind the property, whether on the property or not, with camera gear in hand, in the dark.
