Can a gun be employed without being fired? Yes, which is a far cry from using a pistol to "show authority and enforce command", which was your original point, right? You need a better reason than "he wasn't listening to me" to pull a gun on someone.

That was my original point, not some misunderstanding my personal wording—as opposed to the words of official use of force manuals—may have led you into. Police do draw and use their guns without actually shooting.

It's sad you again attribute thinking to me that I have never expressed. It sure has felt that 'you weren't listening', and there may indeed be civilian hotheads who might pull a gun for that, but I can't imagine any but the most aberrant and atypical police officer doing so. Nor do I believe I said anything the least bit like it. After all the time it took me find the words to make my point clear and you to work through from my original wording, I don't think either of us wants to repeat the process.

There it is in black-and-white and to reiterate, a firearm has nothing to do with authority or command; it's a direct response to a potentially lethal threat. If your original point was indeed "guns can be used without necessarily being fired" maybe you should have written it that way from the get go. Again, the gun has little if anything to do with authority or command and if you think it does, it just further emphasized why the gun control argument is so weak; the Antis don't even bother to inform themselves about the other side of the story and would rather regurgitate emotional yet illogical pleas and spew exaggerated, if not outright incorrect information.

Yeah, no quarrel with that, and when we finally both got to 'guns are used by cops for more than shooting people'—which was the point I tried to make with the words that so offended you—we have agreement there too. Could I suggest we'd both have saved a lot of effort along the way by trying to see where there was agreement that could be clarified rather than imagining the other guy had to be annihilated.
