Will be going to the USA, I have 2x $800 in exemptions. I do not smoke, so I will not be bringing back tobacco. Will bring 2 bottles of Scotch back. ( about 25% cheaper than CDN prices, up to 40% on premium booze ) What else can I buy in the USA that is low in price compared to buying in Canada?

You are allowed up to $200 in groceries / per car if they believe it is for personal use. I will bring with me a cooler and just before I slip back across the border, I will get the milk and perishables.

Actually, I am heading there before the Easter weekend and will be coming back as people are heading to the US so I can avoid the rush.

I am not a smoker now, but if a person is use to CDN ciggies, I do not believe that he would enjoy American ciggies. I use to smoke British 555 brand ciggies when I was younger, but it was a conversation starter to meet girls when I offered them Brit ciggies.

I find that clothes and shoes are much cheaper in the US than in Canada, and with more selection. Of course, this assumes you are giong somewhere with good shopping such as good malls or outlets. I pretty much do all my clothes shopping and purchasing south of the border. If you are going to be staying somewhere, you can even have stuff shipped there in advance which is something I've done before.

I will be driving a Sprinter van, so it is no problem to haul stuff back. I was just wondering if when you ship stuff it is duty free.

Where I am going, there are lots of mall with big box stores.

Milk is a good idea . So is cheese . Regular groceries are not cheaper in the US . Least not near the border towns . Fruits and vegetables are more expensive over there . Meat is no bargain as well . I buy my oil for my diesel truck over there at Walmart . 9 & 1/2 liters for $30.00 . Some Walmarts only sell the 1 gal. containers .

Came back today . We were over there for 3 hrs. We both had just over $100 in groceries each . I had $107 in goods ( such as oil ,3 containers ) and stuff . My friend had $92 in goods . Even brought back a can of gas ( 25 liters ) . I never mention the gas , only if they ask if I have gas in a can . Gas can in back of truck , not in van or car trunk .

We do this every couple of weeks . Never have been asked to pay .

Just look here to see what you like to have . Then check out the prices when you get there.

No it's not duty free . Maybe if the items are worth under $40 . Shipping to Canada is expensive so why not bring it back yourself . I order from different places in the US and have the items shipped to my US Address. I cross to pick up my stuff and do some shopping at the same time .

Never ship to Canada . Usually you have to pay duties and other stupid fees along with expensive shipping costs . There are also many items that are not allowed to be shipped into Canada but bringing those same items never seems to be a problem . Well for me anyways.

If you are staying at a hotel in the US or at a friends house and have things shipped there from Amazon.com, zappos.com, etc. you will not have to pay duty on it when you retrn to Canada as long as you are under the $800 or whatever limit. It is no different than buying it at a store in the US, and you can take advantage of free shipping and often no US sales tax on shipped items. Prices are often better, too.

I do not need any weed killer, but I did find a good place to get it if you need it. Good yard and outdoor supplies too.

Try and buy a few mid-efficiency gas furnaces. They still make them in the States, but for some stupid reason are not sold here anymore. You should be able to get them for 3 or 4 hundred new, probably easily sell them for 6 or 7 hundred. Not sure if you are allowed to bring them across the border, though... If you have any luck, let me know, I'll gladly take a few off your hands.

(I'm not talking about the new high-efficiency ones, but the older style that have a venter motor, but still use C-vent.

Car related stuff like tires and car detailing stuff for example.

Brand name clothes. Food products. I usually bring back habanero cheddar.

The selection of ice cream is better south of the border and cheaper.

Not practical to bring back but you could indulge while there.

Yes, car parts are a good thing. It is really hard to beat www.tirerack.com for tires. Search by the tire size ranges and you often can find a slightly off size equal diameter tire that will fit and is super low priced as a closeout.

I just got back from the USA. You have better selection, better quality and lower prices, even at border towns.

I picked up my groceries just before I headed towards the border, a cooler is a good idea for the perishables.

The selection of clothes are as good or better than in Canada, but at lower prices.

They will allow it if it looks like it is for personal consumption, people have told me they have brought back 3 gallons ( 12 liters ) but I would not try it.

Yeah well you should see how much we get ripped off here and all the taxes.
Shopping with your exemptions in the US, you are saving at least 40%

I do not need any r134a now, but when traded in my last car the air conditioner crapped out that winter, to fix the problem I slipped across the border for a can of r134a at Walmart for $20. They would have deducted $1000 off a trad in with a non functioning AC

Booze. Even if you don't drink. It's good to have around for entertaining.
I brought back 2x 1 liter bottles of Chivas Regal, I paid about 25% less for the 1 liter bottle as I would have paid for the 750 ml. bottle here with 25% more to boot.

I hit all the big box stores and got nearly the full amount of my 2 time $800 duty free exemptions. I did not get the cheap version of the Big Green Egg at Lowes Hardware, I was too early. The no name cheap version is $299 vs. $900 for the Big Green Egg.
