Did you end up doing what you went to school for?

When I left high school I wanted to be a Journalist. I was a part of the Newspaper Crew at school and I enjoyed writing. I still love to write but more short stories, poems and I am working on my first novel. After a year in a Journalism\Public Relations program I realized it was not for me. I don't like to write under deadlines.
I switched to Advertising because the program sounded cool lol. It was a lot of fun and hard work. Had some issues with OSAP and had to take a semester off. Once everything was clear I switched to Business Management with a focus on Administration. Finished the program and earned a diploma. With the credits I earned I can transfer to a University and fast track a degree. (I am all schooled out for a bit though)
I chose Business Management because it seemed a little more practical than advertising in terms of getting a job.
For the time being I am working as an SP. It started off as a way to pay off my OSAP loans, but I found I actually like the business. A lot of people I know are also working outside their field of study. Including some of the ladies I work with. Hence the thread title, did you end up doing what you went to school for? Why or why not?

I'm not working in the field I originally studied. I went back to school and switched to a different field of study- the change worked out well for me and I have been working in the field I switched to ever since.

I didn't really know what I wanted to do when I finished high school. I knew I wanted to go to university but wasn't very clear what I wanted to do as a career. Some people seem to have a clear career vision for themselves early on; I wasn't one of them.

Yes. Maybe not exactly but I work in the same industry that I studied and use some of the knowledge I studied in University.

I have a double specialist in physics and mathematics from U of T...... havent used any of it since. should have just gone into computers from the start thats what i am doing now. i always love during interviews:
them: so i see you went to u of t. why physics?
me: i liked it in highschool and it was very interesting and i still to this day enjoy the high level aspects of the field.
them: it's hard isnt it?
me: a lot easier for me than drawing would be
them: i guess thats right. so how would that benefit you in this role?
me: .....it taught me.... problem solving skills

thankfully nobody ever had any followup. thats the benefit of an educational background that nobody knows anything about. and if they do than they know better than to ask me a question i will obviously have to give a bullshit answer to.

Yes some people are lucky that way, to know what they want to do and love what they chose to do. However like you did I know a lot of people who went back to school after starting a career. They either needed a change or hated their jobs.

Didn't know what I wanted todo after high school, went to university and flunked out first year (didn't know why I was there) then went to school to be a medical laboratory technologist and did that for 40 years.

Not even close, graduated from a good English University with a BSc (Hons) in Geology. Worked in the IT field, currently as a senior consultant, for nearly 20 years.

Nope, not even remotely close. I took a reliable low-paying low stress job salted with supplementary self-employed income over a career of high stress, medium income with a high chance of burn out or unemployment and am much happier as a result.

Depending on the timeline, started in the field, but the things learned were definitely transferable skills. Most people don't, so no mystery.
