One also needs to remember the climate of the era. In some ways it is remarkable that Nikola Tesla was as successful as he was: Foreign born, and not just that but from Eastern Europe (Austria-Hungary); ethically Serbian indeed a Serbian Orthodox P.K.

Although he never order a hit Thomas Edison had a Lucky Luciano personality, he wanted a slice of every pie. In 1910 he won a court case against the nickelodeon owners, he could afford better lawyers. The win effectively stopped the nickelodeons from making moving pictures unless he was paid royalties. So the owners packed up their studios from New Jersey and moved to the village of Hollywood California. Transport barred Edison from getting his protection money from their proceeds.
