Yes, but the room will be more air-tight and warmer in the winter if you can close the window. If you leave it in, wrapping it in plastic will help.
There are many things to consider, is the unit made for year round installation in a opening that is made for an air conditioner. If it is a AC unit that you picked up at a Home Depot and you have it in a window then you may have problems. The lower priced window units should be removed in colder weather. or you may have problems such as corrosion of window sill due to moisture build up, corrosion of the AC unit, and/or cold seeping in in the winter time.
Since summer is here, you do not have to worry about these things till fall. Then I suggest you remove the unit from the window.

k thanks cause I'm having a window air conditioner installed next week and the handy man said i could keep it in all year so i wanted a second opinion on it cause i've never left an air conditioner in all year before.

How much did you pay for the AC unit.
How many BTUs is the AC unit.

Make sure there's have enough BTU's to match your hotness.
Make sure the handyman seals it up nice so your heating bills don't go through the roof in winter due to leakage and drafts.

You will not be happy with the AC in place all year round.
If you bought the AC unit at Cdn Tire, than you did not get the best. If it is in a 102 year old window it is probably wood and not made to hold a AC unit all year round and collect moisture with will destroy the window frame and/or AC unit. If it is 5000 BTUs, then it is the smallest possible unit you can buy and will be running full blast all summer and you will not be happy with the results when the temperature goes above 25C. 5000 BTUs is OK for a room 10 x 12 but not more than that.
If it is not installed, then take it back to CDN Tire if you can. Buy a floor unit with a hose that throws the hat out the window with a tube. 10,000 BTUs is what you need. some units even have dehumidifying capabilities, and heat. they go for about $400-$450 at home depot.

Saw this on CTV this week. They indicate that the floor units are not as good as window units.

Yes, window ACs are more efficent, but if you have a 10,000 BTU floor AC unit in a 12 x 15 room it will do the job and is much quieter than a window AC. The CTV video was also done under severe circumstances of 32C.
