I agree. I would like to add that music utilizes different parts of the brain that relate to emotions rather than simple problem solving skills.

True; I think most of us here learned our "abc's" through the song. It's great for helping memory.

For me this isn't about race or religion.

The curriculum is created by the Ministry of Education i.e. the government.

I think parents should have the right to decide for themselves what is good for their kids rather being mandated by the government. Now of course I do believe in limits. In this case I don't see the harm in not doing music class. If anything when the kids become teens they will be more interested in music because it is a way to rebel so whether it happens in a classroom or not the kid will eventually get some music appreciation.

Furthermore, I don't have to agree with that parent. But I think it is and should be their right. In fact the school system has systems in place to allow for this. They don't advertise it but when parents do complain they can accommodate.

And why don't you criticize Toronto School Board for allowing a segregated public school for black kids only . ....
Um...they don't.

The curriculum is Afro-Centric. The students are any student/parent who wants to register.

I guess no one answered,...because no one said,...at least I NEVER said,... "a guy pulling his kid from music class diminish the rights of everyone else."

But this is Canada,...why justify changing what has worked for so long in Canada,...???...
I love when people post contradictory statements.

BTW. In Canada people have always had the choice to remove their kids from certain classes. Why are you trying to change Canada by denying some people rights that the rest of us have enjoyed?

If they have the choice to remove them from the classes then its not mandatory. The class is either mandatory or not, the Globe in the article says its mandatory.

You are missing the point.

Question, should parents be allowed to remove their kids from science classes,...and still move on the next grade,...???

Leaving out the current government's idiotic,..."everybody passes", part of the equation.

Would you like a list of Muslims playing music as well?

It's a long list....

This thread is stupid. On the one hand the Muslim haters trying to push the lie that Muslims don't like music, on the other hand GoWest trying to equate that to the Amish.

You guys are both jokes.

There is no class in elementary school that is mandatory to pass. Kids can skip every day and still be 'socially promoted'.

The Globe is clearly using the word as meaning it is part of the standard program and the students can't select a different course. Parents have the right to pull their kids out of classes whether for religious reasons or simply going on vacation.

If the guy wants to pull the kids out of music then it is their loss but in no way denies other kids their rights.

IMO kids should be expected to pass before moving on to the next grade but that's not how elementary schools work in Ontario. They should also provide additional support to those kids to help them catch up.

And no, it's not the "current government". It was policy under Harris as well.

This is a different matter than the thread topic though.
