Why? Is Dundas Square, something that really has only been in existence for maybe 22 years, so important to the city? Like, is it a national landmark, something that is a major tourist attraction? The answer is no.
Now, to be frank, I think re-naming things is a slippery slope. Ryerson, while the architect of the residential school system, also created the public school system we use today. I would have been comfortable keeping the name but making sure his story we known. John A. MacDonald was our first PM, and a drunk. He was both a great unifier of this country and political...but also a racist alcoholic. He was a man of his time, and I think it is important that we know the truth about our venerated fathers of Confederation. Now, if you look at what's happened in the US, where they purposely named major military bases after loser Confederate leaders....that's a big fucking difference. How can you name a federal institution after a traitor? So, in that case, I'm totally onboard with those name changes.
