Canada needs its own industries, needs to militarize, and become more dynamic and self reliant.
Not to mention expand trade relations with other parts of the world.
It is like we put all our eggs in one basket and we are now scrambling because we never thought this could ever happen.
As far as Albertan oil exports go putting (almost) all eggs in one basket is
not as serious a problem if that basket is Canada. Had we built the infrasctures
needed to transport oil from western to eastern Canada gasoline gluttons in
Ontario and Quebec could easily absorb a substantial fraction of total oil exports
to the U.S. And if only we had the political will to build the pipelines and LNG ports
required to transport and process Albertan natural gas for energy export to Europe
we could help Europe to alleviate Trump's threat of buying more U.S. LNG to avoid
facing heavy tariff. But Trudeau's response to Scholz's appeal for Canada LNG
exports was to suggest Germany to switch to hydrogen from natural gas.
Now is the time to rethink over-dependence of Canada's energy export
on the U.S.
