Except none of his prior crimes had been more than nuisance level violence IIRC. You can't jail people for life for low level assaults. You have to let them out at some point.
If your idea of a justice system is life sentences for minor criminals, you can go back to the 70's when the US tried and rejected the "3 strikes rule".
