My understanding is it is difficult to trace based on the anonymous information used to set up the account. You use email to create a text app account, not the phone number. Also I heard that companies like TextNow don’t corporate with police very much. They say they do but I have police officers tell me they make it difficult.

Making access to information difficult is the nature of the business. They have an obligation to protect their customers privacy. Show up with a warrant and everything is available.

Personally, I favour due process of law over convenience. Just look south to see what can happen otherwise.
