Thanks for this thread. I'm looking to travel for a vacay so this got me interested over some other place like Sosua. Bogota is inland though - does anyone have any recommendations or thoughts on a beach town like Cartagena (or any other Colombian beach location)?

So how is Sosua now? Looking at all-inclusive beach hotels for a vacay with some hobby but they seem 3* at best. Would Colombia or somewhere else better be recommended?

Costa Rica is awesome...so it's not all Latin America is bad...just avoid being stupid and avoid rough neighbourhoods just like anywhere else. And yes of course there's gringo pricing. You gotta negotiate....and even then what you think is a deal is still gringo pricing baked in.
