Even more interesting to know, would be, how many bureaucrats in municipal and provincial government circles are earning at this level, or higher!

First of all, the part that you edited out of my response was the part where I acknowledged that there are a few bad apples out there. Of that there is no doubt.

Secondly, unless you're following these sr managers home at night and staying with them on weekends how do you know what hours they are and aren't working?

Third, just because a company is losing money does not mean that sr. management is doing a poor job Point is, they are invaribly being measured against targets and, if they are not being measured or they are missing those targets, they are on a VERY short road to the unemployment line.

.
I can't diasagree with what you say necessarily as life is never cut and dried. I know that Senior Managers sometimes take work home and you are right unless you live with each one you wll never know how much.

Having said that I will say however that making over $ 100m and putting in 12-15 hr days don't necessarily go hand in hand.

I can't speak about your company but only the one I worked at for 25 yrs and my current one and I can assure you ( although I did not go home with them ) that our general managers did not put in 12-15 hr days. I do think that sometimes the person making $ 100m may work a lot longer than someone making $ 250m. You say that you did previous jobs not for the money but because you loved them but I do believe when people say this they really would not do the job or work those hours unless they made their $ 100m.

In general the only thing we disagree on is that I think the majority of people who make over $ 100m don't necessarily work very long hours. I am not saying that you don't.

I'm holding in my hand a flyer put out by the Ontario Conservative govt. in 1998 to trumpet their income tax cuts. A chart in it shows that just 4% of Ontarians earned more than $92,100 a year, just 3% earned more than $103, 575, just 2% earned more than $125,000, and just 1% earned more than $177,000. I doubt such upper-income salaries have risen much in the past six years.

I was surprised how few people this represented, so I have kept the flyer. Canada does not have that many really rich people.

Yes, but NYC in not the only big city in the US. LA, Chicago, Philly, DC, Miami, Boston...etc. Housing in around some of these cities are still fairly reasonable if you know where to look.

Think about it, most doctors, dentist etc earn over $100K actually more like over $200K. They don't make up more than 1% of the population so it's up the rest of us professionals (and the SPs) to make up the other 4%. If you have dual income like most families then you likey have $100K combined income. I don't think many of us actually make $100K alone (although I finally hit the mark this year whoohoo - big deal after taxes it still comes out to squat). By the way, Americans do not make more than we do by and large, they just pay fewer taxes and have a lower cost of living than we do so they have more disposable income. Yes some living in NYC have high incomes but its not much different than TO, we make more than similar jobs in say Winnipeg or Halifax.

My HR person at work quoted a stat that said in corporate Canada, a mere 5% of the workforce earns more than $100K.

What do you guys think? Is it true that only 5% of the corporate folks in Canada earn more than $100K?
what is meant by "corporate" canada? i guess if you think of it, most large corporations tend to be heirarchies, with large amounts of people working at low or medium wages - this is true of banks, retail, manufacturing, most wervice industries, etc.

i think you will find that most of the corporate people in this country who earn more than100k are either:

1. corporate execs.
2. highly educated or with skills that command a premium - engineers, specialised techies, medical researchers, lawyers, etc.
3. people who get pay for performance - guys on commission essentially, or who get huge bonuses based on performance.

if you look at the country as a whole, there are lots of other people who earn more than 100k:

1. owners of small businesses.
2. doctors and other independent professionals
3. skilled trades, who get unionised rates of pay and overtime
4. pro athletes, entertainers, or people who get paid based on talent.

and then there is government - lots of people at hydro make over 100k - mostly engineers, but again, there are doctors, judges, and crown corporation executives and others...

all that being said, the 5% rule probably applies to the entire economy, though ontario, alberta and maybe bC are higher than the rest of the country. i think i saw a statistic a few years ago that indicated that FAMILIES with income over $150k were the top 2% - but that includes families with dual incomes, of course.

i believe this was based on the census - the underground economy might make it higher - drug dealers, guys working undert the the table to avoid gst etc., and so on.

When you're talking about people making $100 K+, alot of the time there's no point in talking about hours worked b/c there is no correlation. You work until the job gets done, however many hours that may be.

Yes, but many professionals love what they do. Also, sales guys on commission don't just wake up, decide to do a deal, then go back to bed. It takes hours and hours of making contacts before deals are made. I don't know any sales guys that only work a few hours.
