Come on people. The Kentucky Derby is without a doubt one of the biggest sporting events of the year, and no one has started a thread about it. I guess I'll get things going.

My pick: Noble Causeway
Longshot pick: Giacomo
Friends don't let friends bet chalk: Bellamy Road will finish 9th :)

Wanna hear some picks from the rest of you.

I'll go with Bandini. (Just as an aside - can anyone see any benefit to the 5 owners who are all going with the same trainer, notwithstanding that he's one of the best in the business(Nick Zito)? Not sure if I'd be comfortable with that many as an owner.)

I have a problem with the unwieldy number of starters in this Saturday's Derby. There should be a maximum of fourteen, the effective number for the normal starting gate. It should be fun trying to load twenty skittish and nervous three-year-olds one by one into their respective slots, and to keep the rest of them calm while the they await the starting bell. The first quarter stampede will be a congested and crowded.

I agree with a lot of track people that the Derby, Preakness and Belmont should be held later in the year with a three week gap between races. These three-year-olds are not fully developed in many cases and, as a result, suffer sometimes serious injuries in the Triple Crown races. Also, the present two week break is not sufficient for the horse to recover and be transported to the next racing site. My personal preference would be to test the races over a mile for each of the races and not the present 1 1/16, 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 mile distances. For three-year-olds, this is too much, since these horses were just born in 2002.

Wow. I gotta disagree big time with your suggestions.

First off, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Kentucky Derby is the only race in North America that allows 20 starters. Jockey's are independant contracters. If they feel 20 horses in a field is unsafe, they have the option of not riding in the race. This is the Kentucky Derby. 30000+ thoroughbreds are born each year and they only get one shot and that's it.

No way they should move the Triple Crown races to later in the year or change the distances. Everyone knows that the Kentucky Derby is run on the 1st Saturday of May every year rain or shine at the Classic distance of 1 1/4 miles. The Preakness is shorter at 1 3/16 miles and it's at Pimlico which has tighter turns. The Belmont is known as the final test of champions. To be a triple crown Champion, you need a little bit of luck, show you have to speed to win the Preakness and have the stamina and heart to come back and win the Belmont at 1 1/2 miles. Hence, in the last 8 years, we've had 6 horses win the first two legs and fail in the Belmont. None of these horses in my opinion were worthy of having their names engraved along side of horses such as Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Citation, War Admiral......you get the point.

I have bet on Derby for the past 26 years with some occuasional luck. I had Birdstone at 36-1 on $200 bet on belmont last year.

I would do exactor box of

Noble Causeway,
High Fly,
Afleet Alex
Flower Alley

and Exactor Wheel of

Bellamy Road with Wilko and Flower Alley

I really like Flower Alley with Bliners on and Chop Chop on board for PS bet as well.

Birdstone

I had Birdstone as well. But by no means did I have $200 on him. :)

Gotta keep Bellamy Road off the board. Sorry, I hate favourites.

Bellamy Road reminds of Fusaichi Pegausus based on his wood performance. Key it on top of your exactor or Tri with few long shots should still pay good.

I notice that on www.drf.com many have jumped all over sun king and Greater Good for their selection.

Will study past performance tomorrow and I tend to change my bet based on the odds.

Good Luck.

I was close in hitting the tri but as you all know close means sh*t.

I did not see the 10 horse at all. Should have read the comments on drf about him rather than keying 8 and 7 on the top with 18,12,4

Will wati for Belmont it should be a great a race.....

Giacomo

Come on Guys. I clearly stated Giacomo as my longshot pick. Everyone should've won and won big. Well, I've got an extra $2500 to use on my other favourite hobby. :)

BTW, I had $30 to win on Closing Argument. I also had $10 Exacta of Afleet Alex with Closing Arugment, Giacomo and Don't Get Mad. It would've been a nice hit. Noble Causeway didn't run at all cost me $80 worth of tickets. I will be in attendance for the Preakness Stakes. Hope other Canadians can make the trip as well.

Kinghaven...nice pic with Giacomo!!!

Triple Crown winner this year? I don't think so...

You did/do/work there?(at Kinghaven)...

Know anything about the "sidewheelers(pacers)? If so....?

Who's your pick for the North American Cup?

Meadowlands Pace? Hambeltonian? or the Jug?

Care to debate the quality of thoroughbred vs standardbred racing?

Lukas and Frankel have been very vocal about Giacomo's chances of winning the Triple Crown....lol....they think he's got no chance at all. Afleet Alex ran a great race, and he will be tough to beat if he gets a clean trip in the Preakness. I'm also looking for Bellamy Road to bounce back a bit. Closing Argument's performance really stood out to me cause he was quite close to the pace, yet he keep on going while most of the other stalkers faded in the stretch.

We all know about Pimilco's tight turns and it's all about speed there. Giacomo is the real deal if he can get the job done in the Preakness, but I really don't think he will. But give me 20-1, and I'm all in. :)

I never worked for Kinghaven. When I first started watching horse racing back in 1989, it just so happened that With Approval won the Canadian Triple Crown and then Izvestia did the same a year later. Love those horses and it broke my heart to watch Izvestia in the Rothmans in 1991. I still have my $5 win ticket on him that day and it will be going with me to the grave. With Approval's loss to In The Wings in the 1990 BC Turf Classic, Alydeed's loss in the 1992 Preakness, Talkin Man's Derby/Preakness, Izzy's Classic were all very memorable and disappointing losses. As you can tell, I'm a huge fan of Kinghaven Farms.

As for the pacers, I do bet quite a bit. Woudln't say I'm a big fan, but I did watch Four Starz Sisco win the Barry's Creek Final on Derby Saturday. Loss $20 betting on With Anticipation (Thoroughbred Name!!!!)

I personally love harness racing. It is the area of horse racing that has seen growth in the last while. New tracks at Colonial Downs, Georgian Downs and Grand River attest to the popularity of the sport while thoroughbred racing has seen steep declines over the last twenty years. There has not been a new thoroughbred track built in many years. In Ontario, there are only Woodbine and the perennially-troubled Fort Erie tracks, whereas there are twenty-seven or twenty-eight harness tracks.

While harness is still considered the poor cousin of the two, purses at the prime harness tracks at Woodbine/Mohawk, Meadowlands and Chicago have been climbing steadily, due mainly to the addition of slot machines on the premises. The lack of slot machines at the Meadowlands has clouded that track's future, however. Still, the Meadowlands Pace, the North American Cup, the Metro Stakes and the Hambletonian will exceed $1 million each in purses.

As for the North American Cup, I am partial to Bob McIntosh's barn, particularly his trio of three-year-olds that he likes to parade around Ontario.
As the owner of the prolific Camluck, he seems to get the best of the best colts and fillies.

Harness racing is more appealing to the "working class people". Standardbreds are cheaping to buy and maintain than are Thoroughbreds. Standardbreds can race up to 35-40 times a year and that goes a long way in helping the owners pay the weekly expenses. There's no doubt that Standardbreds are getting faster and faster. Track records are constantly falling and they will only continue to get faster since standardbreds are relatively new compared to the thoroughbreds. I would have no problem owning a standardbred myself if I could afford to do it.
