Heard this on the news today. Why the fuck do they need so many highly paid people?

I know a guy who used to be garbage collector and didn't even finish high school. But he's good at relationship building. 15 years later he's some kind of senior IT manager at some government agency making well over 100k. I reckon most managerial public sector people are like him - horrendously under qualified, over paid, and only there because they knew the right people.

So what you're saying is, despite potentially having 15 years experience, because he didn't finish high school he shouldn't be allowed to make more than $100K?

Sounds like some awfully sour grapes... ;)

My response would be, what have YOU done with YOUR life?

Yeah, in his case I am saying that because he has zero vocational education and and is in a highly technical role. I've worked with him and he's just not a techy guy. His primary interests are hockey and beer.

Sure it's sour grapes. People should be paid what they are worth. Especially when taxpayers are paying.

What have I done with my life? Same as him, just more education, less hockey and less beer.

Before we get all excited, the $100K figure MIke Harris chose was never indexed for inflation, cost of living or any of the things that slowly push absolute dolar numbers into irrelevance. If he had, the line would be about $130,000 today.

True. Still, a lot of them are earning twice what they should once benefits are included, and doing half the work they should be doing on top of that.

Net result is that we taxpayers pay 4x what we should for the government services we get.

Get over it. There are just as many or more "horrendously under qualified, over paid" in the private sector as well. In a lot of cases it is more about who you know then what you know.

Who the hell are you to say how much another man should earn? You're not his boss. You're not his co-worker. You haven't seen their resume or performance report. So who are you to say how much someone should earn? Afaik you're just another guy who doesn't make $100,000. Now who's fault is that?

Fine, but we're not paying their salaries. What happens when everybody works for the government?

Sour grapes - a misused expression

No it's not sour grapes. Remember the story. The fox only declared the grapes to be sour (and therefore not worth attaining) once he realized that he couldn't get them.

"Sour grapes" occurs when one strives for a goal and fails, and then claims one never really wanted to attain the goal or that the goal wasn't worth attaining.

'Sour grapes" would be if the original poster really really wanted the $100,000 position, but couldn't, and then stated that getting the job wasn't worth the trouble because ... too much stress, too much work, unpleasant tasks, etc.

In this thread the original poster's attitude sounds like envy, not sour grapes.

What do you mean by "underqualified"? What does collecting garbage and the lack of a high school diploma have to do with his current position? In the real world, "relationship building" and "knowing the right people" are often critical skills and important qualifications, much more valuable than some piece of paper attesting that one warmed a school chair for a few years.

I don't know what this guy does, but if I had a management position to fill, I'd take a longer look at the guy who gets along famously with people and deals well with them than the guy with a MBA, courses in human resource management, and an inability to get along with people.

Diplomas are not "qualifications"; abilities, personalities and skills are.

Let me be clear. If someone makes 100k through hard work, talent, creativity etc, I have the utmost respect for them.

If someone makes 100k through sucking dick or being a lazy ass, they can fuck off. I think it's more disgust than sour grapes.

If you buy good and services one way or another you are paying for some over-priced under qualified boob...

I have work in both areas. The problem seemed to be worse in the private sector but it might just have been the places where I worked.

Either way the worse SOBs are the "consultants".

agree... they can all rot in hell. Only reason they have these jobs are through connection, suck dicks or they can b.s their way through without delivering.

I feel for the thousands of people who have to sweat at minimum paying jobs just to put food on the table, and pay taxes on top so they can feed these lazy sob's good for nothing

oh... my blood just starts boiling when I hear one of them yap! these sob's good for nothing

If I could have it my way, these ppl would be paid the least and ppl working manual labour paid the most. our society would be better off and produce productive citizens that way... You get paid for what you deliver. Not get paid for b.s that can't be accounted for.

There's a guy making over 100K whose job is to clean the toilets in subsidized housing units. I'm sure he earns it.
I'd rather pay this guy the $100K than some paper pusher sitting behind a desk for 37.5 hrs per week and not a minute longer.

I agree that some people don't deserve to be where they are, but some people are luckier than others.
Remember this...George Bush was once a president.

That won't happen. They won't allow more than 40% of the population to work in the public sector. You see the government needs the 60% to pay for the 40% and will only be happy when we are paying 80% of our income to support that 40%.

Sorry, the government is supposedly asking for everyone to cut their incomes, cut salaries, and yet there are so many examples of those in the public sector not doing that......
