I love Uber, I use it several times a day to save parking costs, but they've been sounding like a jack-ass company lately.
The study itself that this neuroscientist authored however, does have some merit.

Uber IS a jack-ass company. If you want to use technology to book, track, and even pay for your fare, there are plenty of options out there, even if the taxi companies don't have a multi-billion dollar ad budget to compete against Uber on that basis.

What company in the Toronto area is a current competitor?
Hailo left Nov 9th.
When it comes to a service to get to and from a location fast, I choose Uber every time.
I'm not sure about most, but I'm not concerned about their issues in the media. When I need a cab or black car, they have been reliable and extremely convenient to use. I can't say the same about my other experiences.

Chloe, how do you feel about the likelihood that Uber has likely identified you are a prostitute (if you use them to get to and from outcalls) and is plainly willing to leak that information to others in the event you (or more likely one of your clients, whose addresses they are compiling on a list based on your travel) are ever publicly critical of them? They have sought to use information like this against their critics in other jurisdictions.

I agree that they have provided a service people want but the practices of the company are ethically very troubling.

Think twice before using Uber for appointments I guess.

I never use Uber for my outcalls. I have a security detail for that.
I was referring to my daily life errands, to and from places like school, downtown restaurants and nights out with personal friends when I am not the designated driver.

Ethically speaking, they most certainly have some fixing to do but it wouldn't personally stop me from using the service. Especially since I use it for simple travels within the downtown areas of Toronto and NYC.

A lot of people are critical of service providers, including people I interact with quite frequently. I wouldn't cut ties with them due to their beliefs. It is their prerogative and that's cool with me.

Is their actual proof of these statements ? There has been simply outrageous and completely unfounded accusations by Toronto cab companies trying to get them removed from Toronto. I have not used the service but I have heard from friends and recently some radio commentators that the service is fantastic. I've heard enough positive feedback to put the app on my phone in the event I need a cab during the holiday season.

BTW: Sorry Fuji ... found this blog: https://web.archive.org/web/20140827195715/http://blog.uber.com/ridesofglory
Like Google and any new company that inherently has data at their fingertips - you will get the curious sifting through it with various filters. I still plan on using Uber - I can't see anyone particularly fascinated by my activities.

Price, convenience. They really do have a good product, but some of the company execs are extremely unscrupulous.

Heaven, definately Heaven
I wouldn't dare use Uber. No need to have Silicon Valley low-lives use "God View" to know where I'm going.
Worse, if I get an SP (or in my case, two SPs) and she (or they) uses(/(use) Uber, that's also a fail.

How much money can you actually save versus using a cab?
For one you dont have to tip the cabbie.
You also dont have to bring money, everything is automatically charged to your CC online.

I can see why Uber quickly became illegal in Toronto, they are competition to regular cabbies.
Time for taxi companies to make a deal with Uber and work together, because you can't stop progress

Again, just because a company doesn't promote their app doesn't mean they don't have one.

Call your cab company and ask them if they have an app. Many do, even in the Toronto area.

amazes me that people would worry about Uber tracking your movement when here you are on a hooker board...

I dunno 'bout you OTB, but I never see ads on Google, even though they claim 94% of their $$ are ad based.
So maybe, I'm doing something right that Doogle can't see.

Gyaos. :p
Do a "google search" for anything....travel, hotels, appliances...anything. You'll see results at the top with an "ad" icon - you'll also see a list of paid advertisers on the right hand side of the page. Google auctions digital advertising space based on the words you type into your computer. I'm pretty sure they know what you've been up to.

Yup, the road to privacy officially ended when the internet was invented. The NSA is watching us, Google is watching us, Facebook is watching us.......etc......etc.

I dont even give a shit anymore, its not like you can stop it anyways. Only way is to go off the grid and move to a cabin somewhere near Wawa and live like Ted Kaczynski
