I lived in Chicago for 6 years. A d work has me visiting clients in every neighbourhood. So all I can say is Chicago is a beautiful city. One of the best. I never had any issues. Even in the rougher hoods. But most of that violence is in certain areas. So you can go. Visit. And never know about that side of Chicago. Hell I lived there and never really noticed it until I turned on the news.

Chicago is one of my favorite cities in the US to visit. It's a great weekend trip from Toronto. I've also had nothing but great experiences. It's unfortunate that certain areas are so gang run and driven by senseless violence.

too many gang-bangers -- not enough cops

I live in Chicago, and most of the violence is in the poor south & west sides of the City. All the gang-bangers & the dope peddlers have guns and use them on a regular basis. Chicago is in serious debt, and can't afford all the cops
that would be needed on the streets.

I'm old enough to remember large parts of New York City looking like third world and its subways a no go zone, after dark. Everything made by man can be unmade and vice versa. Just need a bit of resolve.
True. I first visited NYC in '98 and was almost disappointed at how sanitized it looked and felt.

I frequented NYC from 1989 to 1998 and saw the transformation first hand. It went from naughty to nice. I actually like a little bit of naughty to add some spice to life.

Chicago is like most big American cities. It has good neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods. The violence in Chicago is concentrated in the poorer neighborhoods on the south and west sides, which are best avoided. The areas the tourists visit and the more affluent neighborhoods on the north side are safe and fun to visit.
