Too many people have access to firearms that should not. RIp ti those departed and sympathy to thier families. What a shorty Christmas memory for them.

I want to know what Doug Ford and the Mayor have to say about this, on the record, and perhaps connected to a polygraph. And see how many times Ford blames Ottawa.

Shooter is dead. Only good news out of this story.
I don't care what problems he had, he killed 6 people and injured 1.He deserved to die.
SIU is on the case. They want to ensure the police didn't use "excessive" force when they took him down.

I agree 100%. Often it is 100% definite and totally obvious who the guilty party is . In every single case like that I want to see the guilty party to act in a way that they have to be shot dead on the spot.

Guys....

Time for some self-reflection.

All the comments above demonstrate that few actually watched the videos the shooter posted before rushing to post something, anything in a rush to judgement based on our pre-conceived bias'.

From watching the videos posted on his Twitter/Facebook it is clear this man has severe mental illness, and in some videos he is clearly suffering from the effects of sleep deprivation.

Just watch this one video he posted at 4:37 AM early Saturday morning, a few hours before he went on his rampage to get an idea...

https://m.facebook.com/story.php?st...l&id=100010769972426&sfnsn=mo&mibextid=RUbZ1f

Essentially, he feels that the proximity of some electrical transformer and wiring is causing his runny nose to burn his skin etc. Blames others for making him suffer.

Likely suffering from:

Paranoid personality disorder (PPD). It is a mental health condition marked by a pattern of distrust and suspicion of others without adequate reason to be suspicious. People with PPD are always on guard, believing that others are constantly trying to demean, harm or threaten them.

From the reporting so far, it seems he took the Condominium Corporation to court. Likely seeking them to shut off the electricity or something. Likely already complained for years to Management and the Directors, who likely and rightly dismissed his 'allergy to electricity'.

So he decided to just go door to door and shoot them.

My supposition is this is a case of a severely mentally ill, delusionally paranoid , sleep deprived man using a gun to murder people who thought dismissed and demeaned him, and thought were trying to harm him by keeping the electricity on.

Did he use an old double barrel shotgun he used to use for hunting before you needed an FAC? Highly unlikely he recently got a PAL, and unlikely he bought it on the black market.

Really hard to prevent these kind of tragedies. And I hate to say it but it's a good thing for everyone, including the mentally ill old man, that he is dead himself.

And it shows what a SHITTY, thankless and risky undertaking it can be to be a Director of a Condominium Corporation.

Really sad that they had to pay the price of being an unpaid volunteer with their lives.
Paranoid schizophrenia, rather than PPD.

PPD doesn't involve somatic delusions. That's schizophrenia.

PPD - the sufferer has no weird physical or auditory hallucinations, but has a profoundly distorted view of the world where everyone around him is trying to cheat or spy on him. I knew I guy who quit his job "because the other staff and his boss were plotting against him". Stopped going outside because the "neighbours were spying on him". Refused to attend any family or social events because "everyone was out to get him". And was involved in family court litigation because his ex wanted to end his access because he was ranting to his 5 year old kid about "traitors".

He'd run through 5 or 6 lawyers by the end of the first year in court. He quickly turned on each and accused him / her of "working for the other side".

I was one of the lawyers. It was pretty chilling to interact with the guy. I used to have an image in my mind of Caligula whenever I dealt with him.

"People with mental illness account for only 4 percent of crime overall. But, when you look at aggression and violence against family members, that percentage increases to between 10 and 12 percent. When examining violent incidents against strangers, such as mass shootings, the rate rises to 20 percent."

I can't quickly find the rates for non-mentally ill people but I vaguely remember reading they are much lower.

I defer to your expertise and experience.

But I will add that the noise possible living directly above or beside a transformer vault can be irritating to the point of insanity. Not even going into anything about electro magnetic interference (EMI) or anything on that spectrum, but just the humming sound and vibrations of the thousands of amps of current being transformed down to a 60hz 208VAC 3 phase supply for the condo building and all the suites, is audible. Especially at night when there are no masking sounds and people are trying to sleep.

One of the biggest condo management complaints is noise. Those living in suites near or beside elevators, or mechanical rooms complain about it often. There are things that can be done to mitigate these noises but I can see how this guy's manner would have him dismissed as just being a crazy old man.

Simplest solution in these cases is to sell your place and move. But as you well know in your line of work, people get dug into something and won't let go... for the principle of it.

From what I've read, the shooter allegedly attempted to sell the condo but could not find a buyer.

From the Globe...

An October, 2019, court order was issued against Mr. Villi prohibiting him from communicating with the condo board or condo employees. He was ordered to stop making video and audio recordings of them, and to remove posts from social media, where he had posted a variety of rants and escalating threats.

This fall the condo corporation initiated legal processes to request his incarceration and to force him to sell his unit. “In its motion, the condominium requests a term of imprisonment for Mr. Villi,” Justice Mary Vallee of Ontario Superior Court wrote in a Sept. 26, 2022, order.

Wtf, requesting imprisonment? Did somebody go a bit too far?
