Society was already well on its way to returning to serfdom, but AI is going to accelerate that process.
Historically it takes about 100 years to replace lost jobs.
Impact:
The invention of the Spinning Jenny (c. 1764) and later the power loom revolutionized textile production. One worker could now do the job of several.
Job Loss:
Artisan weavers, particularly handloom weavers, were devastated. Thousands were thrown into poverty. The
Luddite movement (1811–1816) was a direct response — workers smashed machines in protest.
Recovery Time:
Roughly 100 years before the balance of labor fully shifted. By the mid-to-late 19th century, the textile industry employed more people than ever — but these were often low-paid factory workers, not skilled artisans.
The fact is as "stupid" jobs disappear half the population is below average, so half the population will have no jobs. Added to this many intelligent jobs are actually repeatable, accountants, contract lawyers, basic medical diagnosis for example. Some jobs wil demand humans regardless, but the nonsense of the population crisis is nonsense. We are going to have 4 billion or so unemployable humans who only source of income will be crime and violence or state support.
As the economy sheds jobs that once absorbed the middle and bottom thirds — clerks, warehouse sorters, truckers, paralegals, basic radiologists — you are left with:
- Super-demand at the top for elite thinkers, visionaries, innovators, and emotional laborers.
- Super-saturation at the bottom with billions of people who cannot, through no fault of their own, upskill into post-labor roles.
